Option Tyre? (Merged x3)
Not exactly a critical issue hehe.
The WRCs do look great with 19" wheels on their tarmac stages and the bulky-looking FPVs and sporty-looking HSVs both are fitted with them... it would be nice to the see V8s switch to 19" wheels when they go to a control wheel with maybe the same tyre construction made at a different size. Would it actually change the handling or order of the teams much? Highly accurate representation, complete with WRC-style 5 wheel nuts! : |

i watched a nascar race while up in QLD (the unit has Foxtel) and i would be suprised if they dont change a tyre as quick as any of our v8 teams, except they have 5 wheel nuts.
Im all for 19 inch wheeels if they move to control wheels. but prior to then it would be a big cost lots of wheels to change |

Michelin were said to be interested in tendering for the V8Supercar contract, but only if they moved to the 18" or 19" sizes (as used in Europe)

I tihnk they look better with the current profile wheels. The DTM/WRC Tarmac style of very low profile looks crap in my opinion.

If TEGA passes 19in rims, I hope they change the rules so we could go back to the good ol' days and freedom of tyre choice

Think back to 1996/7
Skaife on Yokohamas, Perkins on Dunlop, HRT on Bridgestone Seton on Bridgestone ?? Dick on Dunlop ?? I know we had at least three tyre manufacturers in the sport at one point, id like to see that again !! |

If we're going to talk tyres - I think they should have a softer compound for the control tyre. More mechanical grip, which they need, and those tyre changes would actually be worth it.

Gardner wanted to go to 19 " when he was running as he had an in at Michelen due to his bike contacts TEga said no then, and would do the same again.

I'd like to see different tyres again.
It would at least provide some differences to the cars performance at different tracks. Not to mention the added sponsorship possibilities. DKGandBH Pirelli, Bridgestone, Riken, Yokohama, Dunlop, Michelin, GoodYear, Kumho, Firestone, Kelly Tyres, Hankook... |

I am all for the varied tires too, but with a condition. That they can be bought by any team at any track. If nothing else than to shut up the arguement of "I cant buy the right tyres" . If you look back to when the control tyres came in, you basically had excatly the same teams shareing the same amount of wins, not one priveteer popped up and had a big win once on the "right rubber" it simply showed up the fact that they had other issue's in there set up that was hampering them, or god forbid ................. a dud driver/owner

V8 Supercar Control Tyre Size???
Hi all,
Just wondering if anyone knows the size of the Dunlop V8 Supercar Control Tyre? Can't seem to find the data on it. I realise the V8's run on 17" rims, but I'm just interested in comparing sizes to the Dunlop Sports Sedan rear tyre which is a 325/700 R16. Cheers, FalconEL. |

It amuses me that over 30 years after we moved to the metric system, we still get specs which are half metric / half imperial.
280mm x 680mm x 17inches. |

Option Tyre? (Merged x2)
Given the great racing/passing/action (previously unheard of this year) that cars on Wets vs Cars on Slicks produced at Winton, surely this should reignite the debate on teams having the choice of 2 compounds to race on, or make races longer with 2x CPS and they have to have 1 session a different compound to the other 2 sessions ala F1?

I'm all for the longer races rather than the piddly sprints....70-80 lappers sort out the good, bad and ugly. Additional CPS for tyres/fuel is attractive. It would also give guys who have an "off" a chance to get back into the top 15 instead of parking the car after say lap 20 of 40.

So... there are 3 suppliers (Pirelli, SPT/Dunlop and Yokohama) allegedly in the mix for the control tyre contract from next year and beyond.... with an "option" tyre a possibility but apparently not from next year...
A brand new tyre construction & compound from someone who has not supplied the sport for many years would be the biggest shakeup in the racing... as the teams have to get used to the new tyre's characteristics... Sure an "option" tyre sounds good in theory... but forcing a team to run both soft & hard in a race is more than a little contrived. Why not run it as either hard or soft... nominate tyres at the start of the weekend, and run what ya brung regardless of conditions... that would separate the squads a little further. Would require a testing regime (maybe we can finally get to "grouped" test days at the 2 nominated locations.. YAY!!) of some note to get the drivers used to a tyre with grip |

i say make the races longer regardless of what happens with the tyres, but on the tyre subject i agree with GTR make it like Moto GP nominate your tyres on friday and thats what you run with has thrown a spanner in the works with Moto GP and IMO works better than the current F1 system.
