oz superbikes - its all over.....

yep, the season is all over after the final round at oran park on sunday......

shawn giles had already successfully defended his superbike crown and finished of the year by winning 2 of the 3 races, jamie stauffer took his maiden sbk win aswell....

1.giles 351 (12 wins)
2.coxhell 219
3.stauffer 190

josh brookes won the supersport crown in his first year on the bike - its a pity that the shell advance team took brendan clarke away from this series as brookes and clarke were very evenly matched.....

1.brookes 187
2.daniel stauffer 149
3.baird 148

and mick kelly won the 250cc production title by 12 points from russell holland - again brendan clarke was dominating this series before going o/s

1.kelly 147
2.holland 135
3.allerton 132

The series looked pretty good, looks like we still have some top talent to go overseas.

Pity there wasn't mauch TV coverage and pity also that the Australian Superbike Championship is not what it used to be, full FIM spec bikes, factory teams, and we used to beat the WSB regulars when they raced at Oran Park and Phillip Island.

And to show how well it was known and respected, every Australian SUperbike Champion between 1991 and 1996 got factory Overseas rides the next year, remeber how Mladin won the Aussie Superbike series in 1992 then got a factory Cagiva ride in teh 500s for 1993.

next year should see factory efforts from

suzuki : shaun giles and hopefully another rider
yamaha : radars team will run 2 riders
honda : have said they will be back after financing adam fergussons honda ride in world supersport. hopefully they run 2 bikes, alex gobert and another - hopefully fergusson doesnt race in oz next year
kawasaki : will have at least 1 bike with teenager wayne maxwell

so it sounds promising at this stage, especially with rounds counting towards the championship being held with the world superbikes and moto gp's at the island......

honda are definitely back in 2002 after signing australian supersport champion josh brookes to ride both the supersport and superbike classes as well as the formula xtreme series - honda wish to have 2 riders in all classes, surely alex gobert would get a ride, i dont think he should go overseas as of yet, 1 more year in oz would do him no harm
