PATENTED!! Formula One World Qualifying Championship

I have been working on the qualifying championship, using the 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1 points system for top 8 positions. No real importance, nor am I saying it should be counted in the future. Just a bit of fun. Here is the standings after Indy:

F Alonso - 54pts
K Raikkonen- 51pts
J Trulli - 49pts
M Webber - 40pts
G Fisichella - 34pts
J Button - 23pts
M Schumacher - 22pts
N Heidfeld - 21pts
R Schumacher - 13pts
J P Montoya - 10pts
D Coulthard- 7pts
T Sato - 7pts
C Klien - 7pts
J Villeneuve - 6pts
R Barrichello - 4pts
A Wurz -2pts
P de la Rosa -1pt

F Massa - 0pts
T Monteiro - 0pts
N Karthikeyen - 0pts
C Albers- 0pts
P Friesacher - 0pts
V Liuzzi - 0pts
A Davidson - 0pts
R Zonta - 0pts

Constructor's

Renault - 88pts
McLaren - 64pts
Toyota - 62pts
Williams - 61pts
BAR - 30pts
Ferrari - 26pts
Red Bull Racing - 14pts
Sauber - 6pts
Jordan - 0pts
Minardi - 0pts

My conclusion(s)-

a) shows Webber and Trulli's one lap strengths, and Kimi, Alonso and Button's consistency

b)I have too much time on my hands.

That is very interesting. Will you be updating this after each race?

Qualifying pace <> absolute speed now anyway, so this is a waste of time.

Another thing it shows is the contrast between race pace and qualifying speed - both in the case of cars (well, tyres) (see Ferrari), and drivers (Heidfeld has only half the points for qualifying, rather than the couple ahead that he is in the real thing).

Patented??? The idea to make a World Qualifying Championship was on the minds of many journalists and fans in the past. For example, in Argentinean Corsa magazine journalists discovered that, in a 1981 "World Qualifying Championship", Reutemann would have won the title over Piquet for a single point, 64 of Carlos over 63 of Nelson.

Your stats make interesting reading, Skam85. It's just a shame that with the parc-ferme rules qualifying is no longer the pure demonstration of outright speed it once was.

This is why I genuinely hope that Schuey never beats Ayrton Senna's record of 65 poles. Ot would be a somewhat meaningless statistic nowadays, and also my over-riding memory of Ayrton is the pure concentration and focus which led to some of the most mesmerising Q laps in history. That's how it should be now. We saw a glimpse of it from Kimi in Monaco, but we didn't know at the time how heavy his car was so we couldn't trully appreciate his achievement.

Thanks buddy that's a great list. Thanks a lot, I really find this nice (although it'd be way better if the cars didn't do their flying laps with race fuel in )

Qualifying never was a 'pure demonstration of outright speed', becayse they were running ultra-sticky tyres, specially boosted engines, and ultra-light fuel. In otehr words, tehy were setting laptimes which wer eimpossible in a normal racing situation. The curretn system gives a more accurate guide to race performance, it's only the differening pit strategies which change things a bit.

Under the old system you set your car up to run as quickly as possible, then drove it as quickly as possible.

If that doesn't qualify (no pun intended) as a "pure demonstration of outright speed" then I don't know what does.

Yeah, I'll update it after every race, why not, it will add a little bit more interest.

As for the "PATENTED" part of it... that was a joke
