Does Al Junior actually have his own helmet design or does he always have one just to match the car?

I can understand a driver maybe tweaking a few colours on his own design but to ditch it completely in favour of a sponsors design seems a bit extreme

Always follows sponsors. It is an American thing, even Mario's was based on the Viceroy colours on the Parnelli in the mid 70s (prior to that his helmet was plain grey). Al Sr had a very similar design at that time.

It's actually quite difficult to find an American with a distinctive and constant design until the mid 80s; Gordon Johncock and Lone Star JR were the main 2 (and even Gordy's varied a bit in the early 70s). And the NASCAR chaps - Stewart and Gordon, R. apart - follow sponsorial convention.

Wonder how long that will last? A distinctive helmet is an easy way in for extra merchandising opportunities.

(Oh, and it's not completely unknown in Europe - Gerhard Berger did it with Benetton in 1986, his design being adopted by Derek Higgins, and of course Eddie Irvine had his leopard's bum design recently.)
