Remembering Cars

G'day folks, I used to be a sort of a part time competitor in the Wendy Wools series. My old chum Steve Smith and I used to follow both the BARC and the BRSCC organised events, more for fun than anything else really. I got involved with it just because I liked the cars, how they looked and sounded.

I was never quick or anything ungentlemanly like that, but I like to think that at least Steve and I could field a nicely prepared good looking motor car.

To start with we ran a Ford Escort, based on a standard twink bodyshell. Motor was a 2 litre BDG, 5 speed ZF 'box, Atlas rear axle with four trailing links and a Watts linkage. Colour was green and yellow. I sold the rolling chassis to Roger Matthews and bought the ex Rupert Long Anglia, a spaceframe car built by Richard Wallinger. Much lighter of course, much stiffer and thus more communicative chassis.

Anyway, I've got a couple of photos of the escort, but I'm not sure of how I can upload them to the site. Any (polite) suggestions welcome!

Happy days they were.

John

Remember that the CSCC is to run a Revival race for these sorts of cars (& Modsports, Thundersaloons & Donington GT type cars) at Mallory Park on August ban Holiday Monday. Baby Bertha, DAFnee & the ex MicK Hill Beetle are planning to be there amongst a field of 20 famous cars from this type of racing. As a prelude to this race, this coming wednesday (June 29 2011) there will be a Test & PR morning at Mallory Park, inc lunch time rides for invited Journalists, & there will be 26 cars present.

The test morning will be open to the public. Come along to both the race & test. It is hoped that a number of the old racers will be there, even if they are not competing any more.

Andy:
Will you be taking and posting lots of pics from the forthcoming test day? (please!)
Any pics anyone has from the past of my Lola T 492 with Alan Humberstone racing it will be MOST greatfully received.

Here it is in about late 80's, couldn't be missed in pink and black bodywork....

David Enderby's car still exists & he still owns it. I don't think he can get it ready for the Revival Race but I'm hoping that he will join in next year.

Old Escorts never die....

I think I've found out how to add a pic or two. If the pictures load, the paddock shot is Donington 1978. No apologies for hair or flares, and no, the Marina is NOT mine, or any of my chums'!

What lurks beneath is a ally block 2 litre BDA, components other than the block are BDG.

Special Saloons

This is one of my favourite racing categories. I owned a lime green semi-spaceframe 998cc firbreglass bodied Imp and a Metro special saloon based on a clubman's chassis with a BRM 1725cc twin-cam engine it it, Escort rear axle. Wish i had kept it and re-built it. Would love to know where it is these days.

Sold it on to a guy who sprinted it for a while then he sold it on.
Anyone who can shed some light and pictures on the Metro will be welcomed with open arms.

PS: I have some pictures of teh cars out practising this week courtesy of a very good friend who is a CSCC racing member and MSA Scrutineer
