This just in from Planet-F1:
The Benetton-Renault Formula One team today announced that Australian Mark Webber has replaced Jenson Button as the team's second driver. Webber will drive for the team after the Spanish Grand Prix this weekend. Button has struggled to get to grips with this season's Benetton Renault car, which he describes as "a dog" and despite finishing in all four races so far this season, his highest position has been only 10th. Webber meanwhile has impressed team bosses with his fast lap times and superb technical feedback -something which the team hope will allow them to wring all the problems out of the latest Benetton chassis. Chief designer Mike Gascoyne said: "Jenson has done a great job for us this season, but we need a driver with the technical ability to help us improve the car. Unfortunately Jenson's feedback in testing just wasn't at a level to help us enough." The news came as a shock to Button, who lives in Bicester in Oxfordshire, and was last night being comforted by his girlfriend in the confines of their Barcelona hotel - Jenson had flown out to Spain for the Spanish Grand Prix this weekend, only to be told on his arrival that after the race, Benetton Renault would no longer be requiring his driving services. Team boss Flavio Briatore, who steered the team to two World Championships in 1994 and 1995, thanked Button for his services to the team. "Jenson has done a fine job for us this season, but we need a driver who can take the team forward." Minardi and Arrows have both denied rumours that they are already in talks with Button about a race seat for the rest of the season. I feel so sorry for the guy - this isn't fair. |

Good one Stoddard Supporter!
Webber in Marx out! Poor old Jenson. There's always a seat vacant at Ferrari with Rubens the Disappointer on the way out. |

An Australian in F1
Mark Webber must be someone special or Benetton-Renault must be simply at odds with what to do with their machine. Good Luck to Webber (If this Rumour is true), it's great to have a Australian in Formula 1 again. He has already out-paced Fisi in testing and Im sure he will do the same again come race day. GO WEBBER!!!

Tough break for Jenson, but looking at his times in the first practice session - It would appear he's not taking it to well.
GO WEBBER !!! |

Nobody else has got this news yet. That and the fact that there are obviously contracts involved (ie £££££££$$$$$$) leads me to believe this story falls somewhere short of the truth. The timing also seems strange. Why would you tell someone before the race that this would be their last, why not wait until after? I'll wait until I see confirmation before I air my views on this.

I kid you not - Button has been dropped by Benetton. It doesn't surprise me that he's already been told - look at how Jaguar treat Burti.

Maybe Jenson has a way out of his contract. It is a possibility that Jenson could go back to Williams and replace or work alongside Gene.
Good Luck to Webber, but I feel sorry for Jenson. |

10 out of 10 for effort, but if your report is true, then the driver aids re-introduced in Spain are more worrying than even I thought, as Jenson set 21st quickest time from his hotel room.

Nothing on Autosport The Official News Magazine of Jensen Button ... I'll believe it when I see it there.

Ok, I have phoned my driving instructor who, somewhat fortunately, is at the Spanish GP for the weekend, and he has told me that this story has been going round all morning at the circuit. Webber will drive for Benetton after the Spanish Grand Prix, hence Button is out on the circuit today.

It's all a wind up, people. Just like the Schumacher breaking his ankle last weekend.
Minardi Fan is in the middle of a mid-life crisis (see the Gravel Trap) and think's he's called Martha . No need to panic. If this is not the case, I will buy a hat, eat it and post pictures here... Last edited by MichaelC; 27 Apr 2001 at 11:40. |

Sorry, but I don't see it on Planet-F1. There are the current stories, and older ones that this, but no mention of our Jense being out of a job...
