Justin Wilson doesn't fit!
According to Grandprix.com Justin Wilson went for his Minardi set fitting today and he didn't fit. So, he won't be driving one of their cars.
What will this do for his hopes of becoming a full time F1 driver? Not a lot I think. |

He must be VERY tall. Webber is about 6'0" - 6'1" and he fits.

It's quite harsh for Justin. They should make the cars bigger!
It's no fun being so tall. Take it from me, I'm 6ft 6. AND I wanted to be a racing driver! Last edited by Kex; 7 Aug 2002 at 11:10. |

Its clear that he can be fitted into an F1 car, just not this particular one. Hopefully a drive will come his way for 2003.

Damn shame that, who was going to pay to put him in the Minardi? doesnt seem to be any such thing as a free ride at the back of the grid.

People didn't believe me when I said some time ago that JW was too big for the Jordan he tested a few months back!
EJ was quoted in MN at the time saying 'Justin would benefit from a change in the chassis regulations' or words to that effect. F1 chassis cost a huge amount, and the idea is to make them light and ballast them up to the weight limit. Clearly 'off the peg' racing cars are made to accomodate the largest size drivers. (American's come in Large, XL, XXL) I remember Justin when he was a 'pint size' Cadet kart racer back in the late 80's (I still have a picture of him then on my office wall) he was very quick, but not the quickest. |

chasis (and weight) regulations were changed for safety reasons as well as to accomodate larger pilots. I thought that cars had to seat a driver of 6'3, but having had a look at them I can find no mention of this. He has tested a few times for jordan last year so he did fit, guess this years cockpit is just smaller. If a team wants him to drive for them his size would have to be considered at the design stage, and unfortunatly i dont see that happening. shame.
Not the first time size has been a problem. I remember Berger, i think, saying that because the car was designed for senna he had to cut the top off of his racing boots to drive comfortably, and we all remember the saga of Mansell's butt! |

It is a real shame he does not fit in the car as he is a real talent - I see from this weeks Autosport he test a F3 car in the last week or so and was on the pace straight away - shame maybe Soddart can do a deal for him to race next season.........

He did fit in the Jordan, and the Minardi... Just!!!...His problem was exiting in the required FIA safety time scale!

Hill isnt that tall, though he is tall for a racer. just saw a picture of justin testing in a Jordan, he's lucky his helmet wasnt sucked into the airbox! not safe at all and apparantly that was after the "seat" had been removed (im presuming that we are talking about removing a standard seat, yes i know that there is not a standard seat, shesh you guys are picky)
It does say something that so many people are trying to squeeze him into a F1 car but i think he should accept that it probably isnt going to happen and try his hand at V8 saloons or something (champ cars way to dangerous) DTM or TOCA |

Justin Is a good sngle seater racer , if he doesnt get a F1 chance i would like to see him stay in single seaters rather than go to sallon car racing .

Such a shame- his best hope would be to join a team with another lanky driver. I think Coulthard is the tallest in F1 at 6'1... and Wilson's 6'4 isn't he?

I'm 6ft 2 and I can compete with the best of them in Karting, I set a faster lap time than Guy Sheffield (who is 5ft 7), who was Formula A kart champ some years ago.

At the nd of the day, a team will be able to accomidate a driver if they really want him, look at McLaren, they have DC who's around the 6 foot mark, Kimi, who's not as big (i believe) and then they have Alex Wurz in the test car whose 6 foot 3 (the same height as Wilson) it can be done if the teams so wish!
