DNS/DQ./#8/Brian Chatfield/Chatfield/Ford Capri- DQ after qualifying....
IIRC, the story according to the Autosport race reports is that after a few eyebrows were raised by the Capri's performance at Oulton, where he led the race overall for a while, Chatfield was provisionally disqualified and the stewards requested he bring the homologation papers with him when the Capri was presented for scrutineering at Thruxton a couple of days later. He duly showed up there with no homologation papers, and a different Capri (he had two, a white ex-CC car and a red ex-Spice? car-I think the white car appeared at Oulton, and the red one at Thruxton). He was promptly disqualified after qualifying, and didn't appear again until Donington in July, by which time the Capris had been replaced by a 635CSi...

Thanks a lot, KA. Your help is much appreciatet! Do you have notes about fastest lap on a class-by-class basis, as that was worth 1 bonus point?

Cracking work there KA!!

Easy to forget that whilst 1985 was a generally poor year in terms of quantity, at certain rounds there was definitely quality in the driver line up, particularly in the big class!

It leads me back to the point we've made in other threads, if only ARG and BMW GB hadn't withdrawn in 1984 etc, etc.....

BTW, wonder why Walkinshaw entered a Bastos car at that '85 Brands race, not sure we confirmed this in the Vitesse thread? Was it a shakedown for a new chassis set for ETC duty, or showing it off to a potential buyer?

Or as has been mooted, him liking to remind the series organisers what they were missing!!

I can only agree with chunterer.

Regarding The Walkinshaw victory, he didn't receive any points by the look of it. I guess he wasn't registrated for the championship and thus didn't score the 9 points for victory. But did second placed Andy Rouse get 9 points as best registrated driver or 6 points for finishing second in the race?

Graham Goode was disqualified from round 8. Was the penalty two maximum scores as was the case a few years later? Otherwise he would have won class B convincingly.

I hadn't noticed that! Just looked at the version of the points table I've got (probably from the 1985 season review in Autosport) and noticed something else interesting- Although both McGrath and Hall scored drivers championship points, there were no manufacturers championship points scored for Rover- presumably they hadn't registered either....

Before I continue with another season, I have a few random remarks about the 1985 season.

One is about variety: three classes provided plenty of different models. I think this is what the modern single class saloon/touring car championships lack.

Didn't know much about Patrick Watts before his 1990s Super Touring exploits and very flamboyant driving style. Obviously class winning potential in the previous seasons with the MG Metro Turbo, but never seemed to be in the hunt here in 1985 in the North Essex Motorsport Ford Escort RS1600i. Was the car simply not up to scratch compared to the other Escorts, as Watts scored a single third at round 4 at Donington.

Richard Belcher is not a name I'm familiar with but winning class C on four occations taking second in class from Alan Curnow in the Datapost Escort. Is the John Jeffreys Engineering Escort the same white/blue/red car that ended down under in late 1986?

Always thought of John Morris as a Volkswagen racer, but here he's racing a second Brooklyn Escort.

Looking at class B, the turbo cars of Graham Goode and later Richard Longman was streets ahead of the ageing Alfa GTV6s. Four of those raced on a regular basis. The Terry Drury cars seems to have disappeared towards the end of the year though.

Of the class A runners, I'm most impressed by Neil McGrath finishing third in class. Again a driver I know little of but he finished all his 11 starts, somehow missing at round 10 at Brands Hatch in August.

Enough of that, as I will look a 1983 installment for tomorrow likely.

Watts was a fairly prolific, at least in terms of race wins, one make racer in Mini's Metro's etc before he stepped up to Group A. The North Essex RS1600 was the ex Jock Robertson/Pegasus car I think. It wasn't properly sorted in 83/84 either.

Again, Belcher was a regular Metro (and prior to that Mini?) racer. His car was I think an ex Datapost car.

Of the class A runners, I'm most impressed by Neil McGrath finishing third in class. Again a driver I know little of but he finished all his 11 starts, somehow missing at round 10 at Brands Hatch in August.
Indeed, the Alfa's were almost past it in sprint trim (although in Germany it was still ok thanks to handicapping?) by the time the Nissan really found it's feet and the RS Turbo came along.

As with Watts and Belcher, McGrath was another BL one make exponent for many years, and IIRC gave Steve Soper a real run in the Mini 1275 series in the late 70's?

AFAIK Belcher's John Jeffreys Engineering RS1600i (as you say, think it was an ex-Datapost car) was sold to Australia or NZ at the end of '85, and went on to race at Bathurst in '86 with Andrew Bagnall- Belcher then moved to Prodsaloons with a effreys-backed RS Turbo for '86. He popped up on occasion in Julian May's North Essex Motorsport RS1600i as well if memory serves

As I remember, the North Essex RS1600i was one of those entries best described as 'perennially underfunded'- I think it was also one of the cars written off in what I once heard described as the Thruxton Mega-Shunt', which also involved Sheene's Supra, both Terry Drury Alfas and a couple of Brooklyn Escorts....
AFAIK, it was reshelled, but from what I've read (think it was discussed fairly extensively on one of the Ford RS forums a while ago- the car is still around and owned by an RSOC member) it was a pretty frantic affair, with the car still being finished in the paddock at the next round!

Jesper OH should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
Absolutely cracking with some updates on the earlier Group A years, KA. Thank you. BTW, do you have info on fastest race laps per class, as it's significant for bonus points.
I'll keep myself updated, while I'm also checking what I've got for the 1989 Championship ...that will now appear in a thread of it's own, thanks to this wonderfull site.

KA has a real shot at the podium!KA has a real shot at the podium!KA has a real shot at the podium!KA has a real shot at the podium!KA has a real shot at the podium!
Round 5, Thruxton, 27 May 1985. Race was stopped and re-started after a multiple car accident on lap 1. My notes say 20 laps, but don't know if that's the originally scheduled distance, or what it ended up as after the re-start- I suspect it's the former, and if so, what was it finally run over?

1./#1/Andy Rouse/Rouse/A/Ford Sierra XR4Ti/30m47.81
2./#11/Neil McGrath/Linden/A/Rover Vitesse/31m17.13
3./#5?/Dave Brodie/Brodie/A/Mitsubishi Starion Turbo/31m45.33
4./#30/Jon Dooley/ARDT/B/Alfa Romeo GTV6/31m48.34- 1st class B
5./#32/Rob Kirby/ARDT/B/Alfa Romeo GTV6/31m53.46
6./#31/Graham Goode/Goode/B/Nissan Bluebird Turbo/31m54.53
7./#69?*/Chris Hodgetts/Brooklyn/C/Ford Escort RS1600i/31m57.15- 1st class C
8./#74/Richard Belcher/Jeffreys/C/Ford Escort RS1600i/32m10.55
9./#2/Pete Hall./Rouse/A/Rover Vitesse/32m12.42

DNF./#66/Alan Curnow/Datapost/C/Ford Escort RS1600i- 9 laps, accident damage (from the first start, or did Curnow have another incident?)

All DNS at the restart, involved in the lap 1 accident:
#7/Barry Sheene/Hughes/A/Toyota Celica Supra (car was written off)
#12/Mike Newman/Burlington/A/BMW 635CSi
#40/Phil Dowsett/Drury/B/Alfa Romeo GTV6
#41/Terry Drury/Drury/B/Alfa Romeo GTV6
#70/Patrick Watts/North Essex/C/Ford Escort RS1600i (another write-off)
#79*/John Morris/Brooklyn/C/Ford Escort RS1600i
*Both Brooklyn Escorts were involved in the shunt and damaged. I won't swear to it without looking it up, but the drivers may have swapped cars to enable Hodgetts to take the re-start in the less-damaged car of the pair- the other car being pretty much a write-off

DNS./#65/Stig Gruen/Gruen/C/Toyota Corolla GT
DNS./#77/Geoff Kimber-Smith//AGK/C/Toyota Corolla GT
(Gruen and GK-S both missed the original start with mechanical problems)

Grid (original)

1- Rouse (XR4Ti/A) 1m31.45
2- McGrath (Rover/A) 1m32.39
3- Brodie (Starion/A) 1m33.24
4- Dooley (GTV6/B) 1m33.50
5- Sheene (Supra/A) 1m33.62
6- Hodgetts (RS1600i/C) 1m33.56
7- Goode (Bluebird Turbo/B) 1m34.66
8- Belcher (RS1600i/C) 1m35.18
9- Hall (Rover/A) 1m35.32
10- Watts (RS1600i/A) ??? (I've got a rogue time of 1m40.34 in my notes, which must be wrong, unless I've got the grid order copied down wrongly)
11- Curnow (RS1600i/C) 1m35.51
12- Newman (635/A) 1m35.73
13- Kirby (GTV6/B) 1m37.90
14- Kimber-Smith (Corolla/C) 1m38.62- DNS, head-gasket
15- Morris (RS1600i/C) 1m39.13
16- Dowsett (GTV6/B) 1m39.15
17- Gruen (Corolla/C) 1m40.57- DNS, transmission
18- Drury (GTV6/B) 1m42.27

Hall's Rover and Newman's 635 both a good couple of seconds off the class pace here, and down amongst the Class C cars. Dowsett's Alfa similarly slow- problems in qualifying?
