Williams should have a shootout for the second seat!

The obvious canidates for the second Williams seat are, Davidson, Pizzonia and Nico Rosberg.

I think Williams should do a shootout will all of them to see who is the fastest.

Other drivers should also be added to the fray such as Hekki, Hamilton and Piquet.

I agree totally...but whilst I as a mere father get no say what so ever...despite my many years continuous (and very successful) junior management...have to wait in the background whilst 'famous fathers' who followed our junior trail with no greater results have the ear of important people!

Hmmm, well, I know they only just made Foxhunting illegal...but I reckon racing drivers and humans in general has been outlawed for even longer. Maybe wrong though!

I reckon Davidson would be more capable of getting away though, so he'd get the seat. Though Pizzonia maybe used to rainforests etc., lil Rosberg will be first out I reckon.

From Webber's experience it may be more helpful (Japanese TV style) to hang each of the prosepctive driver's bums over an open fire and see who yelps first.

I'm not sure whether shoot outs really works.

I think Uncle Frank should opt for Davidson. What more does the guy have to do. For me, Rosberg can get in the queue behind Ant and Pizzonia - well!

They should certainly test Ant before hiring anyone - they've seen roughly what Pizzonia and Rosberg can do, and have the chance to race Rosberg twice before the end of the season. The shoot-out last year only really worked because they had both drivers under contract for 2005 and could test them repeatedly to decide which wouid race - this situation could be different unless they can sign Ant up without committing to racing him (and I doubt he'd accept those terms again).

I still have a vision of Fisi in the second seat with Hekki Kovalainen taking the Renault seat. Failing that SFW would have to be looking towards Pizzionia - after publically stating how tough he found it to overlook him last year a single year deal seems worth the risk given all the other issues.

Ant might get a look in if the British sponsor rumor has any truth.

Yeah, I personally think Pizzonia has the inside line for this job, given Frank's public admiration for the guy. Who knows ....... someone may drive around the outside of him and take it ...........

If there was a shootout, I would like to see Sebastien Bourdais thrown into the mix as well.

Then they should sub-let the guy to a new works team for a couple of years before letting him team up with a world champion at a team that is beginning to get to grips with F1 then they should try and poach him back, sign a contract with him for the next year then sell him back to the team anyway.
Oh, wait a second....

Fastest in a test is not always best. The overall level of feedback and how a driver is in the team is also very important. If the driver/engineer do not click then over a year there is no point. My backing is on Pizzonia, I don't care if Webber likes him or not Pizzonia is a good driver with technical feedback otherwise he would not be a Williams test driver/driver at this stage. I would put Rosberg in the test car and have a Webber/Pizzonia line up. Well I'd have a Pizzonia/?? line up but unless Pizzonia races to the end of the year the team would benifit from stability.

The other Pizzonia point is he brings sponsorship with him so all in all good for me, good for the team in terms of money and even good for team in a good competent driver!

There's no point in having 2 drivers who don't get on as team-mates, unless your car can be fast enough to dominate. Williams need 2 drivers who can work together to develop the car and positively motivate each other. Maybe Pizzonia was trying to do Webber a favour when he took JPM off in Belgium, as that gained Mark a point. They have every chance to see what Rosberg can do in F1, and shouldn't make a decision until then.

I fully agree with that, Boots. Temprament is vitally important at this stage, and Williams need a driver who will get right inside the team and pull in the right direction. From the point of view of spectacle for us fan it would be nice to have two top drivers duking it out, but from the team's perspective (which I put first) a second driver that can provide good feedback and reliable results would be much more constructive. I'm not sure why Ant is not more prequently linked to this scenario - I certainly think he shoud be. Maybe the glamour isn't there and Nico would be a preferable choice for sponsors - although surely the sponsorship money will flow to results more easily than it will flow towards a famous surname?

We discussed the feasibility of a shootout way back when; after DR suggested it as an option. I think we all pretty well agreed that it would be impossible to fairly conduct. Too many variables involved.

Williams have managed to do it twice before:

Heidfeld and Pizzonia
Button and Junqueira

And I would say they got the right man both times.

Williams second seat should be given to the driver who is most likely to hang on to his contract the longest through thick and thin with no thanks at the end of it.Which kind of puts AD at the top of my list.

totally agree.

If they were a more marketing-oriented company like Red Bull this would make a great TV show too.

If there is a 'shootout' I'd like to see Davidson, Rosberg, Paffett (highly unlikely given his Merc connections), Jeff Gordon, and hey what about Mika, now he is up to racing speed again!

No point having Pizza. If they still don't know how good he is by now, the answer is not good enough.

No, they really shouldn't. They've embarassed themselves enough for one year, I'd like to see them pick someone sensible and get their heads down.

Can't really see Jeff Gordon getting the drive to be honest. I'd say Flash Gordon has more chance.

He's not having the best time in NASCAR at the moment, but I don't think he has any plans to make the switch. In addition it would probably be too late for next year already. He needs a lot of experience.

He had the drive in 2003 in the FW24 at Indy n that swap day with Montoya.

His comments suggested an F1 drive would be impossible, although he was reasonably quick.

Driver lineup is prob. the least of FW's concern right now. I say fork out $2.0M for C. Klien, and use the rest of that $50.0M on finishing up the wind tunnel. Car 1st then driver.

Webber sees Nico Rosberg as most likely to be his team mate for 2006.

I hope they give Rosberg or some other rookie a go just for the excitement of watching new talent in a competitive car. I have a sneaking suspicion that in general F1 drivers are highly overrated.
