F1 v WRC?

Monday 26th January 2004. Ecclestone, the 73-year-old boss of F1 has laid out plans for a very innovative Charity race that will be held some time during the half way stage of the F1 calendar. The top 5 drivers in F1 v the top 5 drivers in WRC will drive WRC cars (Advantage WRC drivers) BUT it will be on a circuit and not a rally stage (Advantage F1 drivers). So we could see the likes of Schumacher,
Montoya, Raikonnen v Sainz, Solberg, Gronholm racing in the WRC 307CC's, Impreza's etc. It will be like the good old days of Rally Cross.. and with the ego-tastic drivers mentioned above, this will be no 'Friendly Fun Charity event'

ohhh fun, i wonder if it wil pull the really big names, although i think it would've been better to have chosen a more equal medium, say Citroen 2CV's.

Now that sounds like great fun! I'll bet the F1 drivers are going to have a great time doing that.

I wonder if I'll get to see it here in the states though?

Only that I'd put my money on the rally drivers, not because they are inherently better drivers but because:

- They would know the cars.
- The nature of rallying, even these days, means they have to be adaptable. Rally drivers are often quite good at changing discipline.

I'm always shocked at how quickly top drivers adapt to a new car or new circuit. I have great respect for the rally drivers, but I think the F1 drivers will flambee the WRC guys. I'm not one who thinks the best drivers reside only in F1 either. I hope it's a real race, not just "watch the driver's go 'round at a leasurely pace" type event that gets televised all over the place.

You forget that WRC cars you have to change the gear for yourself. The F1 boys haven't had to do that for a while so will be diatvantaged. Also anyone who has driven a car with for wheel drive(competitivly)will tell you they take a bit to get used to.

I remember Richard Burns struggled when he raced in the Porsche Supercup at Silverstone. (The Support race to F1). However when Mika Hakkinen raced in 2 events in 93, (Monaco and Hungary), he won and got pole in both.

Although the Porsche's are rear wheel drive.

Colin McRae was pretty quick when he tested an F1 Jordan. I can't remember exactly how close he was, but i would guess that F1 drivers, percentage-wise, would have difficulty getting on terms with rally stage times.

Of course, there are always exceptions. Clark and Hill were quick when they turned up on the RAC in '66 (?), though you could argue that F1 cars and rally cars of the day weren't so disparate then as they are now and both Clark and Hill were used todriving lots of different cars anyway.

1200Datto27 has a lot of promise if they can keep it on the circuit!
All top WRC's have paddle shift gearboxes now, and what sort of gearboxes do you think that the drivers road cars would have?
