Volvo are reported to be intent on pulling out according to this

http://blackflag.jalopnik.com/volvo-...cry-1671880583

There seems to be plenty of reports that reflect the same thing saying that the company wants to remove the motor sport image altogether world wide.

That's right. Did you read it as the article goes onto the say "at the end of the contract in 2016" so the policy of Volvo is to end all motor sport participation at the end of any existing agreements. This is a world wide policy not aimed at any particular region and at the moment is in force as part of their corporate thinking.

So are there any technical specifications out for this new class yet? 2017 is only 18 months away.

It got discussed in 2014 when it was current.

I would be surprised if Gen2 is any more than opening up the body and engine rules.

It'd be very VERY dumb to stray away from the existing CotF platform

Hope you are right with that one.. but you get the feeling that someone in the tower of power might just want to reinvent the wheel, because they can...

New Gen 2 Regs Soon

Current CotF chassis with a new body silhouette and new engine seems to be the gist of the changes...

You know, it would be nice if ITR (the organizer of DTM) shoved their ruleset to V8 Supercars... Chassis-wise that is!

Still, doing balance between NA V8s and Turbo-charged V6s would be a nightmare scenario.

There isnt a taste for carbon tubs down here.. nor the capacity to build them in commercial quantities...

A mate had to send an 18 foot skiff to the US to put it in an autoclave because the facilities are not available here last year.

It will be impossible to get parity between the two, anyone who understands the differences between an NA and forced induction motor will see that. The power under the curve time period between the two is the big issue.

Especially at higher altitude tracks. I doubt anyone will attempt to develop a v8 further.

Exactly right, looking at the out-of-phase power diagram (electronic MIP diagram) one can see that a forced induction engine suffers greatly due to the lower air density at higher altitudes and at high ambient temperature, unless you can change the specs of the turbo to suit - nightmare to control for parity.

I thought forced induction went better at higher altitude, that's why the best WW2 aero engines were supercharged.

They will work, but you need to spec the super/turbocharger for the thinner air. We tested a turbocharged engine in the highlands of New Guinea and found that was down 30% on power because it had a "sealevel" spec turbo so unless the new regs allow different turbos for different altitudes, they will suffer at altitude, they also perform very differently at different ambient temperatures.

But wouldn't the NA engines be running short of breath also?

They have higher compression ratios and swept volumes and don't rely on the charger pumping as much air, sure they suffer too but not as much.

Still the evidence seems to be contrary to what you are saying.

The article does not compare the relative performance of na versus turbo engines at sealevel versus high altitude, it simply states that fitting a turbo to any engine will allow it to compress more of the thin air at high altitude. They are comparing the same engine with or without a turbo.
