Roberto Moreno to V8's?
http://news.com.au/common/story_page...5E3102,00.html
By Gordon Lomas (Courier-Mail, QLD) FORMER F1 racing driver Roberto Moreno is setting his sights on moving to Australia and switching to V8 Supercars. After a long and distinguished career in Formula One and Champ cars, Moreno talked exclusively to The Courier-Mail yesterday about his intention to move his family from Florida to Australia. The Brazilian's ambition is driven by his desire to seek a better lifestyle for his family and teenage daughter Andressa, who has less than two years until she finishes high school. The 43-year-old said Australians had played a vital role in his career, punctuated by several stints in Formula One in the 1980s and early 1990s, winning the F3000 title in 1988 and the Australian Grand Prix in 1981, 1983 and 1984. "I've always dedicated myself to formula racing and I've achieved a lot so far," said Moreno, who won pole position at the Gold Coast Indy in 2001 when he was driving for Patrick Racing. "But my family are wanting more time with me and I would love to move to Australia and begin a career in V8 Supercars. "I owe a lot to Australia for my career and the lifestyle is such that I can do V8s and still have plenty of time with the family which is not possible in the US." Moreno owes much of his success to Australian Greg "Peewee" Siddle who guided the driver through his early years in Europe in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Remarkably, Moreno lines up with the Herdez Competition team in the Lexmark Indy 300 at the Gold Coast this weekend 22 years after his first race in Australia in 1981. "I've always said Australia is the best place in the world to live," he said. "I'm serious about V8s and I still have the passion and speed to race and I'm ready for a new challenge." Moreno would bring a wealth of experience to V8 Supercars with his development prowess and long involvement with many of the world's best teams. He finishes his one-year deal with Herdez Competition at the California Speedway on Sunday week. "The best time for me to move to Australia would be when Andressa finishes high school but if an opportunity came up in V8 Supercars next year then I would gladly take it." |

Roberto is a real racer, a charger, he would be great in a Falcon team- say in place of Max.

Larry and Moreno go back a fair way. I think they competed o/s against each other and also in the Tasman Series for Formula Atlantic driving RT4's. Greg Siddle was his mentor then.

interesting!
as good as Moreno is i think id still prefer to see a seat filled by an aussie / NZ driver 1st. with guys like Longhurst, Ritter, Canto, Dumbrell etc likley unable to find full time seats next year is it such a good idea to be getting in talent from overseas? Alot of people object to the series going to China, giving the reason that they want to " keep the national series national" but does this attitude also extend to drivers? |

Moreno would be a tremendous addition to the series, he is a great driver, overlooked in the echelons of racing history as a true legend.

What? We need a 43 year old Sth American to make our Series better! How about more young Aussies?
CART is an American series that's stuffed because it's filled by no-names from south of the border (US/Mexican border that is) who "good ole boys" don't recognise or relate to! Do we want to do the same here - as well as become a retirement home for O/S drivers? |

I'm not sure Dick would want another overseas driver anyway. Not likely Moreno would end up there in my opinion. I think he would be better off doing Konica for a year at least anyway.

I wouldn't overly be fussed... if he comes over then great, but I won't be crying if he doesn't. I think we have a good enough bunch here already

Would Greg Siddle try and get him a seat at Larkham's team?

I'm not a fan of Japanese food (although sushi makes a quick healthy lunch when you're working) and I'm not a fan of our V8 series being a retirement home for ex-CART and F1 hand-me-downs.
Who else but the train-spotter types of motor-sport know of all the drivers in the Indy 300? Do we want them buying drives in our Falcons and Commodores when they can't find a spot in Indycars? I know Australia is a very attractive place to live, but we've got enough young talent here. |
