AFL leads on attendances easy, but my feel is that says more about Victorian people than NSW rather than the sport.
I'd also be interested to the comparative tv figures between AFL and NRL as I'm led to believe that more NRL games are shown live? |

In contrast, AFL is embraced by Victoria, SA, WA and TAS. In other words, the stands are full and the fans are paid up members. Can't say NRL is anywhere near as religiously supported. Sydney Swans and Brisbane Lions fans are similar in this regard. |

Reply, let them know what gets missed. Newspapers have become interactive let's take advantage of it, and at the some time, if it appears as though that V8s has an audience editors might pay more attention to us and give us more ink. |

AFL has far greater attendances - of that there's no question.
TV rating wise - different story. Regular league games are very close on a national coverage (AFL pips it slightly). However, Origin is always at least equal to (and often exceeds) the AFL Grand Final. Times that by 3 matches, League wins, plus the NRL Grand Final is often similar in numbers to AFL's. On FoxSports, NRL far outrates AFL. Rugby League matches are the most valuable (highest rating) Pay TV sporting commodity in Australia, beating Cricket, Socceroos and so forth. In Pay TV, AFL is not far ahead A-League (soccer) and Super 14 Rugby. Slightly off topic, however one point of interest regarding TV rights value is not so much your national coverage, but your geographical coverage. The only two markets that are considered of value to advertisers is Sydney, then Melbourne, then a considerable distance back to Brisbane. Having done this comparison a few years ago, Sydney ad rates are up to 4 times that of Brisbane's, which is over double that of the Gold Coast (which in TV land is considered a 'regional' area). Canberra, Adelaide, Perth, Darwin & Hobart fall even further down the pecking order. So as far as TV rights go, Rugby League holds dominance in two of the three key markets, AFL only one. In theory, the TV rights for NRL should be more valuable. In practice, because there was only one station bidding there wasn't much of a negotiation. In AFL, Kerry Packer's last act was to screw Channel 7 by putting in a ridiculous bid, which C7 matched, hence the record rights deal that the AFL has now. |

As for NRL having big TV ratings... I'm not convinced. If it was so big, people would follow the game. The attendances are usually a good sign as to the popularity of any game. If you look at the cricket, the one dayers are well attended. The tests... well the first couple of days are, then the stands are virtually empty... probably because the patrons' liver starts malfunctioning at that point... Don't forget though, cricket only has a huge following in the sub-continent - that in itself is the game's Achilles heel. Motorsport is global and comes in various forms. V8SC is here to stay until another suitable category threatens, or more likely, the US auto giants fail to remain solvent. |

NRL rights have never sold for more than the AFL despite your claim that NRL should be more valuable. Isnt Gold Coast included with northern NSW to be #4 in the national market place? Not sure your attempts to aggregate makes sense in terms of the marketplace. Soccer may play a role in the non footy 'summer market' when next available to FTA. NRL is a better TV spectacle than AFL (hard to judge unless you appreciate both sports). I am a West Coast AFL fan living in Melbourne where they play live only 5-6 times per season so forced to watch the TV (Foxsports predominately). Is the return to 7 on the AFL a part of its #1 network rating, part of the reason for 9s slip in ratings & the advertising rate card? The role of cricket is a fact whether your sporting fancy is cars, bikes or tiddlywinks. |

Pitch another popular sport against the cricket and I'm sure you'll get very little interest in the game. Unless the commercial stations decide to embrace the game of soccer, then cricket is pretty much left alone with very little commercial sports competition. Now there's an idea for the entrepreneurs... PS I wonder how last nights game between Richmond and Carlton would compare in terms of attendances (87,000) with the whole round's attendances in NRL? Very favourably, I would imagine. |

isnt that the point though chatters. why it can claim to be the 2nd biggest national sport. because AFL does not rate in northerns states and NRL does not rate in Southern states. thus it can claim to be bigger nationally

The NRL doesn't pull the rights money it should because the TV networks don't really want it.
Seven and Nine both want AFL because it is a popular national game and AFL works everywhere, even in Qld and NSW. Up untl the Lang Park redevelopment the Lions regularly pulled crowds bigger than the Broncos. Not as much now because Rugby League has a better stadium. Sydney has been a bigger struggle for AFL. The biggest thing the NRL could do to limit AFL infringement on Brsbane numbers would be to establish a second Brisbane club, although being a News Limited owned club the Broncos have a disproportonately large say over that. Be that as it may the Lions and the Swans give AFL a national presence where as the Rugby League deliberately turned their back on Perth and Adelaide. t's partcularly a blow n Perth as the NRL has ceded the city to Rugby Union when they might have had a presence. On numerous occasions, Nine, the only network who has ever been interested in League has tried to broadcast only finals and State of Origin. Anyway when Nine bumped up their AFL bid to bump up Seven's counter bg t dd force Seven to gve up what Nne really wanted to pay for t. So now Nine has the Olympics because Seven couldn't afford AFL and the Olympics. Rugby League, V8 Supercar and everyone else gets the table leavings. |

I thought the NRL tried to get into Perth with the Western Reds, but couldn't get any momentum going.

in a bolt from the blue, new statistics and demographic study suggests maybe as many as 50% of potential TV viewers are women. Apparently some women like watching other women in professional sport. But it is good to see someone out there has the blokes viewpoint covered.

I think he was referring to women watching tennis, rather than playing it... A phemomenon which is not common to the other sports mentioned.
