It's not the lap time so much as how it's being made. Those ALMS cars didn't have anywhere near the straight line speed of this generation of P2 cars. The premise prototypes should be slow through slow corners is a bit faulty as well. For one, there isn't anything on Earth that can hang with an LMP1 through a hairpin, and for a second on a track with no high speed corners there is no need to compromise the setup for the slow bits (plus they should still stop way better anyways). 10 years were were watching LMP2 cars go significantly quicker around Long Beach with way less horsepower and it was a lot more exciting to watch them lap.
Thankfully looking at the Sebring segments they are at least faster in the quicker corners. But this still ultimately becomes my argument for why having decent tires matters. They're handicapping the cars enough it considerably subtracts from the spectacle. |

Anyone trackside today? Managed to arrive LAX -> LB via rental car. Exhausted from the flight but nothing quite like Can-am machinery to wake you up!

The NASCAR Xfinity Series race is running far far behind schedule. They'll be lucky to finish by 4:30 let alone 4:00 pm eastern time.

What do you expect when NASCAR and Goodyear in their infinite wisdom didn't schedule a tire test at TMS after it was resurfaced?

And that's what happens when a slow driver in a car not well suited to the track is put in at the start...

Another in the Ed Brown scrapbook. Still don't think that was Vilander's finest hour though to be honest.

Dang missed the pass for second .... Saw the other Mazda pass. I bet it would be exciting if these cars were racing on this track.

Hopefully the #55 can make a race of it, at least before it breaks or a calamitous Speedsource pitstop

Vilander was in there as deep as he could be with such a short braking zone. If he hadn't put his nose in there he would have been run over by the Ford instead.
Every year they start Ed Brown at Long Beach and every year he ruins the race. |
