Thanks Mike, I must admit I was a tad nervous especially as it wasn't my car, but it was very predictable, just like an MGB with a bigger engine!

Only place you’ll get decent French pasties on Iain’s list is Spa! Oh, and spelling please- it’s ‘quasson’........

The HSCC Escort race at Brands (and qualifying) seem to be scheduled now to be 15 min each, and both on Sunday, which kind of takes the shine off the occasion for me.... Guess it it will be early start with van and trailer just for the day.

Dunno about your supermarches, John, but JS have complex ovens that use a combination of methods to reheat bread etc. I say reheat because from what I’ve been told virtually nothing is cooked from dough in store nowadays, it comes in frozen / cooked and is just ‘revived’..... Do the in store boulangeries in carrefour etc. still bake from the raw product?

I’m now wondering what the H&S reason (undoubtably!) is for not baking from scratch.....

I would think that the primary reason is that they cannot get or keep suitably trained bakers at the pay rates that the supermarkets offer.

I must admit that I miss the smell of bread being baked when visiting the supermarkets. Just as I sorely miss the unmistakeable beautiful aroma emanating from shops where they used to roast coffee beans. But that's from a memory from many years ago.

Was it you Iain, or someone else, who a long time ago recommended pumpkin seeds as a cure for that ailment? And I ate a lot of those for a long time, but did not notice any effect. I gave it up a couple of months ago and now I only get up once in the night regardless of what, or how much, I have been drinking.

I always say that although inconvenient, getting up in the night and having a pee is far less inconvenient than not getting up in the middle of the night and having a pee...

I can’t see the problem with having to get up for a pee during the night, it’s called getting older. One problem is that it becomes routine, so even if you haven’t drunk enough liquid, you still get up....

Lars, I think pumpkin seeds are touted as a natural remedy for kidney stones, caused by not drinking enough......

A few months ago I seem to recall there was an article suggesting that back in the days before electricity (and so presumably longer "nights" some of the year in the northern hemisphere) it was quite usual to wake up in the middle of the night, do something for an hour or so - perhaps watch the stars or bake some bread? - and then go back to sleep. About 4 hours in each sleep session was mooted.

That would make some sense of the middle of the night waste product evacuation. Also it would explain the availability and use of chamber pots in the days before "divan" beds became the fashion.

Possibly also the number of offspring in so many pre-20th century families.

Before electricity, Grant? May be they had to change the candle lights or put some more wood in the fire place.
Nights are long but it seems nightgowns become shorter those days. Specially in northern France…

And to try to please Bob, I'l add that racewear sleeves are getting longer! Happy days!!

Not certain but I don't think anything, especially croissants, is made from raw materials in supermarkets. Interesting how the results vary from Carrefour to Carrefour though. One local branch seemed to burn everything for a while. Another has a duff blade in it's bread slicer - there's always a double-thickness slice near the end of the loaf! The boulangerie at Auchan in Arras is the tops for me qround here.

Whilst on the subject, having set fire to my old one last week, I bought a brand new toaster for 3 euros at a Brocante on Sunday. Still in it's box & made in China, no CE-type marks, so probably made to a higher standard (!), but it works!

Yes it depends on each supermarket. If Auchan is doing good in Hauts de France, its because they have their head quarters near Lille.
If you like wine, have a look when they announce "foire aux vins", the prices are rather attractive for a huge choice. In this matter some Leclerc are good too, depending on each shop owner.
When you mention Arras, come to my mind many fiestas we had there, before racing at Croix en Ternois… People in this region are so nice.

Hmm. Take care John. Your description of the product suggests it has the makings of burning somewhat more than toast or even itself after very little use.

Be especially wary if plastics are involved.
