Caltex Cruncha
Gardner has completly trashed the brand spanking new Caltex Havoline Number 9 in a big one at Griffins Bend during practice. Looked like a fairly big failure... he got a bit of councusion from it, but is ok.
...and another Ford hope bites the dust... |

That's a shame, they could have been one of the quicker Ford's there come race time.

From V8x
Bathurst has claimed its first victim for 2002, with Queensland 500 winner David Besnard ruled out of the race after huge shunt this morning by co-driver Wayne Gardner. Gardner was on his out lap when he lost the Caltex Havoline Falcon coming off the end of Mountain Straight. The car was too badly damaged to be repaired in time to race on Sunday, and its withdrawal will be confirmed at a press conference at 1pm. This is a double blow for Besnard, who will most likely not be racing for the Stone Brothers team next year. |

What can I say about Gardner?
Nothing really - he raced bikes, should have stuck to bikes - he should never have been given a car licence... |

I wouldn't be so harsh on Gardner, it looked like a big time failure.
I think the team had an option on the Mundy car for Indy/New Zealand, but I'm not sure about Bathurst- it would probably require the consent of all entrants.. |

Hard on Gardner? Sorry - I was being nice - he is a jerk of the first order.... |

They had it on Ch10 11:30am news. Lost the brakes, backed it into the wall, spun in the air, and creamed the front. Looked rooted, and it's obviously too bad, because the TAFE boys can work miracles..

From info I have the car is too bad to repair. Also, the team can't use the car they sold as it requires not only Stewards approval (that could easily be obtained) but the consent of every other team (although I would love someone to show me this rule in writing because no one has ever been able to produce it when I have asked about it...)

Typicall Gardner. Never Liked the dude all that much.
Litterally Seconds after the session was red flagged, my mate Brian who is trackside, phoned me to say what was going on and then I saw it on the 1130 News with smiling Ron Wilson. OUCH Typicall Gardner though. I for one am devistated, As a huge SBR Fan. Last time I spoke to Brian ( completion of top 50 percent qualifying) he said that the thing they use to switch off brakes during a pitstop had been activated, but once underway the driver failed to turn it back on and hence had no brakes. I have no tech knowledge so was wondering if this would be correct ?? BTW happy 43rd Birthday Wayne |

If it is true how do you live down forgetting to turn your brakes on and missing out on the most important race of the year ?
Is this guy about to become the laughing stock of the nation or what ? |

If you're right, Toolman, I'd like to know how that system works and why they need it. After all, don't you need to keep the brakes on during tyre changes?

Yeah I didnt think he was right about that, Just said on the news brake failure, not driver failure, but brain fade might have played a part

gtr69 - yep sure does
Tool Man - reports I have received so far indicate that it is something to do with a bleed nipple that has to be either adjusted or turned during a brake change. Whatever needed to be done wasn't done causing loss of front brakes. Still trying to find out more. |

Ouch. Bad luck SBR , Besard and Gardner. I still can't get over the Idea that they won't be rebuilding to car or getting a replacment for it. Kevin Mundy has spare car at Bathurst. Why not use that one?? No even Try! Give it to the TAFE Boys to have a try? Anything.
Its Very Disaponiting. |
