Not sure.

Theres talk that about 300bhp is the most controllable power for FWD, but 4WD is different because of the extra grip.

At no point - in theory, you just use less throttle! It is just whether you can control it, in the conditions. For instance in a straight blast, you can have loads more. Anglesey in the wet would probably require less!

Of course on the Skyline there is lots of electronics to help you, so I imagine a sensible high number could be much higher. Again, in theory, there is no limit, if the computer can catch it!

In a general situation, I've heard the max for a FWD car is about 240bhp! After this it becomes silly. RWD is much more and 4WD should be best I suppose.

However even more generally, you can never have too much power

The limit is set strictly by the traction available, so then the limit will vary wildly depending on design parameters.

i guess . it's racing cars we talk about .. if you can modify the suspension and stuff you can use more BHP for a FWD the alfas are FWD and the Supertouring cars of the cars around 2000 ..had plus 300BHP .. also .. for a road car .. 147 GTA ..Autodelta(not the same one . this one is a tuner from England it appears) has developed a 327 BHP version .. and did not put a AWD system http://www.italiaspeed.com/news_2003...k/release.html

So much depends on the application and as stated above, the available traction. Drag cars regularly can use more power than a road race or oval racing machine could ever hope to put to the ground, but since their tire loading is simpler to control than the slip angles when cornering, this is possible. One thing that a ridiculous amount of horsepower can do is allow the engineer to employ taller gearing to control torque induced wheel spin and possibly gain more top end speed.

The Mopar built 7.0 liter V8 used in Mark Kinser's World of Outlaws sprint car is rumored to produce in excess of 1100 horsepower at maximum tune. Kinser's father, who is the engine tuner, stated that they lowered the rev limiter on the motor and use taller gears to control the wheelspin and increase engine life. This left them some reserve power in the motor that they could tap into if conditions allowed or if they needed it.
