Bomber604 should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
Slick tyre pressures?

When racing, I've always used Toyo 888's but out of interest I've just bought a set of lightly used 200/580/15 Dunlop medium compound slicks to have a blast round Oulton on.

Car is a FWD Hatch & weighs 975kg with driver.

Any ideas what tyre pressures I should run?

I suspect the correct technical answer would be find the optimum temperature from the manufacturer and measure hot temps with a tyre pyrometer. Unfortunately thats not much use if your starting from scratch!

As the r888's your going from are semi slick construction, then the pressures you use for them should give you a very rough starting point i think.

No more than 30 hot and be wary of starting under 20-21 cold

I would suggest contacting the technical department at Dunlop and give them the details. They are usually very helpful and may be able to make setup recommendations in order to get the best out of them.

Have you tried them yet? I've just bought a set in the same size for my car (750kg fwd) and the advice I've been given is 26F, 24R - aiming to get to 32 hot.

No, it'll be a couple of weeks before I get the golf out on track again as I'm racing a BMW at Silverstone next week.

Based on experience with my current tyres & their pressure rise rate I'm probably going to try 26f 28r cold to come up to 30 all round.

It's harder to get temperature into the rears of a FWD car.

Your best friend is a tyre surface temperature gauge for the purpose of deciding pressures and camber settings with a slick tyre.

Take inside, centre, and outside temps of the tyres following 4/5 lap runs (ie once they're at running temp) and adjust pressures and cambers until all the aforementioned values are equal across the tread.

If you're getting those readings but the car's not handling right, leave the temps and camber settings alone, and go tinker with something else!!
