You would think that would be the fair thing to do but so far I haven't heard anything along those lines.

Sounds wired, and not the ACO "way to go".
Perhaps they hope that this will give the private cars (which is those who mainly got the waiver) a performance boost to keep up with the diesels? (or rather slows down the Diesels, and let's the Petrol cars catch up).

Well, since these rules only apply for one year, it's stupid of the ACO to try to make teams to follow their BS only applicable for one year rules. But since Audi nor Peugeot applied for the waivers to begin with, this may be an exercise for 2011 as Mike said.

But if the changes in next year regulations are going follow thru in 2011, then it isn't stupid, all they ask the teams to do is make hybrid cars, like in 2005, where everybody except Audi (and someone else) did it!.

The intention of ACO is clearly explained in http://www.lemans.org/24heuresdumans...lemans2010.pdf

In an unfavorable economic context, the idea was to modify the cars as little as possible, continues Vincent. All entrants want to be able to use their current cars in 2010, and possibly in 2011 and beyond*. It was necessary to make a few clarifications and to modify certain points in the regulations to prevent some entrants from investing in solutions that we consider too extreme, and which go against the aims we have set ourselves – to keep the cars’ lap speeds above 3m 30s at Le Mans”.

*In particular, entrants who already have or who are thinking of buying an LM P2, which will become eligible in LM P1 with a few modifications from 2011 onwards.
The aero rules will hardly change in 2011.

In a story he posted at Speed TV.com, Marshall Pruett has stated that Audi is redesigning the nose chimney not so much due to ACO rules, but as a performance enhancement. It's said that the original twin vent chimney produced a huge amount of downforce, but also increased drag(interaction with the nose flap, and above all else, the vented air's reaction with the roll hoops and topside bodywork).

It's been stated in that article that a possibility is a vent arangement that vents the air more towards the sides of the car-how would such a vent work or function differently(more effciently) and what modifcation would/could be done to achive this?

According to http://auto-racing.speedtv.com/artic...stint-1215/P2/ the disputed front (non-)wing will also be reworked.

The article also discuss the Sebring situation. Audi does not want to rush the R15+ into competition. Don't forget the new rule that ACO added: a new car must be homologated at least 30 days before scrutineering of an event and modifications to an existing car at least 15 days before scrutineering. This implies that in order to participate in Sebring the new aero of the R15+ would have to ready at the end of February. This does not give them much time to do proper testing...

I'm not sure if it's feasible, but channelling air to the radiators, then out, may count as what you described?
I suspect there will be substantial rethinking of the R15 before it comes out again. It got spanked everywhere, last year...

Love the selective memory!
The R-15 won at Sebring, lost at Le Mans and performed better that the 908 in a same lap loss, in a monsoon shortened Petit, 1/2 distance. Thats not exactly, getting spanked everywhere!

Well said, but the lack of testing pre LM where they got decent info and the R15 being designed for ALMS-type races and circuits didn't help exept at Sebring and PLM.

It does seem like that Audi wants to change as little as possible for rules compliance though they also want to help the R15 at Le Mans. It's said that they'll try to divert the nose chimney to the sides of the car, but the sideways mounted vents won't work unless Audi designs a new nose(on the '09 car, the front crash structures get in the way), though from what's been said, the R15's nose will be heavily modified anyways, so that solution might not be out of the question, though there should be some way that a partition/divider in the old vents could do something similar, but how or is that even possible?
