You may like to add that Redman wrote off his car in testing in Sth. Africa , Autosport Dec. 3rd. 1970 , page 3 , [ briefly section]

'the ex works devt B18 which redman raced in S.Africa last winter fitted with a Hart t/c' so presumably rebuilt

B-18 found in the USA

Gentlemen, are any of you still watching this thread? I have a B-18 tub that I would like to restore. I have searched for a chassis number based on clues from Roger Andreson, but I cannot find any numbers

This car was last road raced by a Doctor (Dentist) from Michigan before becoming a solo car in the Midwest.

I first thought it was a B20 but Roger assures me it is a B18 based on the notch in the tub for the water pipes.

If anyone has some pictures of a complete car without the bodywork, would you share them with me?

I think there were six B18s sold in the USA. Several started life as Fred Opert rental cars but least one of them had some SCCA history in the 1970s in the Wisconsin/Michigan area.

I presume it doesn't have a logbook, but do you have any more detail on names, dates and places? [Even for the users in Solo]

Just thought i'd post a bit of useless info on a couple of B18s

Firstly towards the end of 1970 Brian Redman decided to retire from top flight motor racing and retire over in South Africa.
As a going away present the Bridges brothers presented him with the chassis previously used by Reini Wisell earlier in the year in F2.
After being totally rebuilt at the factory inc new White bodywork the F.V.A. engine was replaced with a new 1.8 litre F.V.C.

Fred Operts F.B. rental cars.
One of the 4 was in fact owned & driven by Carl Liebich for a least 2 seasons,in fact he was still racing it in 1972 when Bobby Brown was driving an Opert run B20 IN F.B. # no's unknown.

Would this be the Chevron B18? I think this was about 1975 at Longridge.
At the end of of 1968 Brian asked us to visit him and I vaguely remember something then about moving to S.Africa. ( I was about 14 at the time).

LONGRIGE Caravan Park

Actually the photo in Longridge Quarry is of Dave Auckland at either a Longton & District or a L.A.C. SPRINT,as he was in the same class as me in my Chevron B17.

When Brian came back to the U.K. out of retirement in 1971 he brought one of the Red Rose B19s to Longridge for a demo.
His lap time stood until the circuit was turned into a caravan park & never broken.

Found this on a different film. Warren Booth is on same film with Lotus 69. I think it's a Libre race.

Hi Andy,

My mistake,but its still Dave Auckland plus by sheer coincidence i used to maintain Warrens FT200 Gearbox in his ex Steve Chourlaton F2 Lotus 69.
Halcyon days at a 2 gear circuit.

But the man to watch at Longridge in those days in Libre was one Joe Applegarth in an old Brabham with a 1600 Ford Crossflow in the back.

His Brabham,trailer & mini traveller tow car was worth about the same amount of money as Warrens engine.,but he used to beat him every time......... A very canny Geordie.

B18 /B20

Going back to Fred Operts FB cars & Carl Liebich in particular.

I just thought i'd post a couple of my photo's of him at Lime Rock in 72.

The colour one was taken in the paddock.

Also Bobby Brown was competing in the same race in Fred Os B20.

This photo was taken in the same spot as the B18.

It gives you a perspective just how similar the 2 cars were (apart from the inboard front suspension on the B18)

1970 B18 F2 PROTOTYPE.

Back to the F.V.C. Engined car.

The prototype B18 F2 CAR for Reini Wisell was debuted at Mantorp Park in Aug 1970.
Brian R. Emigrated to S .A. towards the end of 1970, yet he is given a car with a 1971 chassis no,could this be the earlier chassis that was written off at the end of 1970 plus also explain the F.V.C. engine that it was fitted with?

I'm pretty sure he took delivery of # 18.A.71.4.
I have a b/w photo of him somewhere.
Apparently he did quite well with the car.

Sorry Ossy, been back up to Lancs. I put a pic of Joe Applegarth on Brabham BT23 thread, no 507. (Sorry about the quality. Had an instamatic camera).
I think Warren Booth had a bit of help from Lancs Car Auctions. The owner lived in the same villag as my Parents.

Thanks for that. I believe he was just as successful with his first Chevron, the one he raced in 1969, but that car is a real puzzle to me. I don't see how it can have been a B14, as we know where those three were in 1969, and it's too early to have been a B15B. So ... the B7 maybe? Any ideas?

Your Absolutely right Andy,over at Rose Grove in Burnley i think.
Then he had a car sowroom later on......Whitestones Garage in Blackburn.
We new each other well , in fact prior to racing we did alot of local sprints together,sometimes in the same class, Burtonwood,Woodvale,Blackpool,Longridge, I.O.M.etc.
He started with a Minisprint,then a Landar then took to the circuits with a V6 Ford Escort (Which was nothing short of a heap of Junk)Then the Lotus,Shadow & finally the Chevron with sponsorship from Crown Paints in Darwen.
I havn't seen him for some time but he used to live at Wilpshire in Blacburn.

Hi Allen,

Maybe i can shed some light on that,the car Warren used in 69 was a 68 B9 F3 car converted over to F.B. spec(That really was only the difference between a B9 & a B14).Most people think they were different but apart from the engine/trans & rear brakes they were identical,apart from the engine cover.
In fact the 3 B14s built in 68 were given B9 type chassis No's.
Which B9 it was i don't know apart from the conversion which was done by Fred Opert.
As you know Fred kept very few records, however if you tell him what colour it was he would tell you who the car went to.
In Warrens case i simply don't know

n.b. ALL FORMULA type # built in that year B9,10 & 14. Number wise was nothing short of a nightmare.

As far as i'm aware the singleton B7 SPENT all its early years Stateside from 68 as an F.C. car fitted with an S.C.A. ENGINE. & never had a # no allocated.

On OLD RACE SHEETS No 37 I put up Formula Libre entry at Longridge. Ossy, can you remember a BRM F1 car being demonstrated at Longridge?

Yes Andy,

I can't remember who demo'd it but was owned by John Mc from Horich nr Bolton . He had more 70s B.R.M. F1 Cars at that time than anybody else in the U/K. including a Yardley 153 & a Marlbro 160 plus engines, & trans galore.
All in absolute mint condition.
Earlier he also had the 1.5 litre Techcraft B.R.M.(The 4.w.d. version built by Roy Lane)
He never raced them as he only did Sprints & Hillclimbs.

John McCartney I presume chaps, with the BRM collection. But wasn't the Longridge car David Taylor's, that my mate Kim Mather ran occasionally in 1974ish?

David Taylors B.R.M.?

If i'm on the right car Dan,the B.R.M. in question came from over Southport way, which never had a B.R.M. transmission,it having been substituted for a Hewland setup & the car was quite scruffy.
Everywhere i competed & saw that car being driven by Kim,Oulton sprint being one example in 74. The car threw its hand in & posted constant D.N.Fs.
