What was that mechanic doing to those tyres?

did anyone else see the 5 second glimse of a ferrari mechanic setting about a tyre, that had just come of TGF's car, with a metal "implement". another mechanic appeered pretty rapid when they saw it was on TV and the guy disappeared pretty rapidly

The mechanic did seem to be cleaning debris/marbles out of the grooves.

actually I was thinking that exact same thing too when I saw that!!!!!...looked like he had some kind of scraper (probably the width of a tire groove no doubt!!)...I swear they were putting grooves back into those tyres which were probably slicks!! and the mechanic did look a little uneasy once he realised he was on TV!!!
But surely the FIA must watch more closely to let stuff like that go on.....but it is funny that we weree thinking the same thing Bibendum and kristof14!!

Lets get more people in on this...does anybody know if this would be possible for teams to do...I mean they probably would have some time after taking the tires off the car to mess with them a bit.....hmm Ferrari conspiracy theroy???

Sad indeed.

HEE HEE HEE HEE

I would think that even a casual observer could tell if the tyre had grooves cut into it AFTER it was used under race conditions. Does the FIA fondle all of the tyres or just the set that are on the car at the start and finish?

Didn't it ever occur to any of you that the Bridgestone technician were scraping off the rubber maybe because he wanted to analyze the effect on worn tyres?

I'm a bit sick listenin of the alledged FIA & Ferrari conspiracy theory....

Michelin have been doing this to their tires as well all season long.

I sounds strange to me that they are allowed to do it but they can.

I've never seen it clarified as to when the tires are inspected. Does anyone know????

The rules stipulate that the grooves must be visible and be present around at least 50% of the circumference of the tire.

found this in the FIA Sporting regulations under the heading of.....SUPPLY OF TYRES IN THE CHAMPIONSHIP AND TYRE LIMITATION DURING THE EVENT.....81) Wear of tyres : The Championship will be contested on grooved tyres. The FIA reserve the right to introduce at any time a method of measuring remaining groove depth if performance appears to be enhanced by high wear or by the use of tyres which are worn so that the grooves are no longer visible.

Pretty vague....subject to change at Scuderia's request. LOLOLOL

check the rules again...it's okay to scrape off the middle section of used tyre's rubbers but not of the either side portion.

Of course he was checking the tread depth to see how wear was going in case the drivers would have to drive differently or change strategy to avoid bald tyres. It's imformation thet you don't want competitors knowing. But the fia conspiracy sounds much more fun!!

Oh -- in case anyone was wondering, the "laugh" emoticon means, in this case, that I was merely joking. I don't think he was doing anything untoward, really; the rubber-analysis/data-gathering explanation is the simplest, and therefore probably the most accurate.

It's nothing to get excited about... all the teams do it, to check the wear of the tire..and analyze the worn rubber on the tire. I remember the Ferrari mechanics doing it Montreal 2 years ago to MS's car after the race. Also, if you hang around Cart(and other paddocks) you will see mechanics cleaning off tires that way so that they are clean for the next run....not a fun job...

Of all people, I should have phrased this a bit better!

The "rule" that I mentioned is not a rule per se. It is what the FIA has decided to use as criteria for evaluating tires, exactly what roolhoop was saying.

I agree with most people on this thread: I'm sure it was a tire technician removing marbles and other debris from the tire, so that it could be examined better.

Teams and tire experts do this to almost all the tires all the time..As was said to scrape away the mung and be able to examine the real surface of the tire..to clean the grooves and measure them...Everything is checked and measured and recorded..we probably just missed them measuring temperature in three or four places across the face of the tire..they do that as soon as possible after they pull them off...

maybe he was done? maybe he needed the loo? maybe his mother was calling him? maybe the memory of evil aliens that look similar to TV cameras scared him off?

Noone will ever know? Sure we can speculate... but lets not see a conspiracy behind every deed someone in a red suite does.

And there is no way I can believe that someone can scrape an authentic 'race worn' grove in a tyre. Unless you have a degree in rubber sculpting or summin!?
