After the accident on Sunday and initial treatment at Alencon I was transferred to the specialist neurological unit at Caen, where they treated me for a spinal injury. Throughout I was superbly looked after by the team there and on Friday night they operated on me to repair my back and critically ensure I continued to have use of my legs. Since then I've been (relatively speaking) up and about and it looks like I should be headed back to the UK this week.

Throughout this whole process I've been blown away by the level of support I've received from all sorts of communities, not least the incredibly kind words from this thread. There have a been a few times when my head went down, and knowing how many people were rooting for me really helped pull through. Can't understate how important it's been, and how much it will continue to be in the long road ahead.

Some individuals have really gone above and beyond in helping me. You know who you are, and I look forward to repaying your kindness in person as soon as I can. To everyone else, have a great Le Mans, I'll be there in spirit and hopefully be back in 2018.

Hi Ian - good to hear you've been treated so well and looked after. Take your time and we'll see you soon.

Simon - glad to hear you're on the mend as well and are able to make it to the race.

See you both soon I hope!

Sorry about that, and can appreciate how it may have worried. Initially I was focused on getting close family informed, which was a slightly more complicated procedure given far flung locations across the globe, and I also wanted to be able to give people here a clear prognosis, which thankfully in this case is very positive.

Looks like I'll be transferred back to the UK either today or tomorrow to continue recovery. I'll try very hard to keep people updated on progress and be active elsewhere to make sure you don't think I've faded away.

Thanks for the update Ian and hopefully you'll be on your way home today. So safe journey for that. We'll be missing you over the next few days and we'll raise a glass or three to you at the meet. Hopefully you can start your preparations for Le Mans 2018 once you get home....!

Just a quick update to say I was released from Caen University Hospital today and am en route back to the UK.

Some pictorial evidence that I'm back on feet is also attached.

As ever thanks to everyone for the continued level of much appreciated support.

Amazing news! I was worried about your spinal injury, fortunately you're already on feet. That's great. I personally know very well what's a spinal injury and how it can be devastating for everyone involved. I suffered a car accident 12 years ago and have been paraplegic since then.
Hope you get well soon and fully recover from your accident.

Back home now, many thanks for all the messages of support and whatever else you wrote on the brace at the meeting, it was a very different le mans this year, more restrained than usual, the heat not helping. Glad to see you up Ian and wearing the traditional meet t shirt. Once they let me drive again will be up to see you.

Nice to see you standing up and giving news. Bah, you know, this was a transition race, the weather was very, very hot. I think you didn't miss to many things. (I wonder if these usual arguments will comfort you )
See you in several months for the next one !
