My dream racing game would be sort of like a FIFA game but for motorsport. The championships it would feature (all with full cars and tracks):
ILMC
LMS
ALMS
WTCC
DTM
BTCC
Porsche Supercup
Super GT
V8 Supercars
FIA GT1
FIA GT3
Blancpain Endurance Series
VLN
NASCAR Sprint, Nationwide, Trucks
Plus special events like Goodwood Revival

Features:
Dynamic Day/Night
Dynamic Weather (snow, rain, sleat ect)
56 cars on track
24 hour races
Upto 5 drivers per car in career and online
Dynamic commentary by Radio Le Mans
Team Manager (eg. tell ai driver to pit)
Penalty system with flags and drive throughs
Track degredation
Ultra realistic physics and graphics

The career mode will start with grassroots racing like Formula Ford or Caterhams in your part of the world (Europe, Asia, Australia, North America, South America) and then work your way to the top of the motorsport ladder in your reagin or you can move to another part of the world. It will also have a calendar so you can race in multiple championships at once. You will get offers to race in the championships/special events by real world teams and sometimes they might give you a one off drive in an endurance race and if you perform well, they might give you a full time seat.

Once you get to a certain level, you are able to start up your own team in any series' and you can chose between low cost fictonal drivers or more expensive real world drivers or a mixture of both. They can race for you in endurance races or championships. You can race for your own team. You can also fire them at any time.

It would be only availible for PC.

Formula Ford is hardly grass roots racing. It takes a fair bit to get up to that level.

True that. I'd say that belongs to Karts. Then again, Karting in reality would be more fun than in a racing game :P

Sort of agree there. I know that karting is one of the main grass roots racing (do it myself) but I just think it's too hard to replicate it into a game mainly for cars because of no diff and suspension. That's why I said Formula Ford is grass roots racing. Anyway, in my game there would be multiple championships you could compete in (just like in real life) like caterhams and Swifts.

A dedicated world wide Formula Ford sim would be mega fun. It would never happen, but it would be MEGA fun!

Think of all the chassis, engine and tyre combinations available to you, and throw in a paint editor with a good 16+ player online for the consoles and tracks from the EU, the USA and Australia!

My dream racing game would be a arcade/sim (manager) game in the likes of Football Manager, FIFA Manager or Pro Cycling Manager.

With a lot of racing series and you could either start as a team manager with your own team or as a driver and build/drive your way up through the hierachy and in the end become F1 champion or something

Purist pretty much hit the nail on the head except in my version I would have Formula Student, or FSAE or Formula Hybrid as the starting point before F3 and GP2 level of motorsports

I like the idea of career modes etc but haviong played iracing for abit, i found it incredibly frustrating building up the licences etc when i only had limited time to actually play the thing. In the end i got fed up of Solstice's and Jetta's and unsubscribed.

The freedom of something like rfactor is perfect for me. I can flit between sports cars, F1, CART, Historics etc as i see fit.

I like the idea of a driver/owner career mode. Building a team, paying for DAMAGE, testing, entry fees etc. But again, it would require alot of time investment, something i don't think i am prepared to give.

I think it would be interesting to see developers produce a game that tried to bridge the gap between sim-racing and reality - a training sim if you like. In other words a game that really educated people about driving techniques, car control, mechanical sympathy, car setup, aerodynamics, safety, component durability, servicing etc - and which could be programmed to give worthwhile feedback on performance. You could even incorporate "blue book" material to help people learn the rules and regs of real racing/rallying.

Rather than going for something glamorous maybe base it on a real domestic championship that players might realistically aspire to compete in - say Legends Racing or BRC for rallying (with accurate full length rally stages)? Done well enough you could make it available to people applying to do MSA license tests. It would be a lot better than the dodgy DVD the MSA used (still do?) produce!

TBH I reckon the reality side of things is overstated in all these sim games, certain things are impressive though from each. The fidelity of the tracks in iRacing and the transmission effects in LFS for example. In LFS in particular if your'e braking late and down shifting without heel and toe the back end snakes around almost exactly the same as my real car does on track. Impressive that they got those transmission effects in there.

I actually think GPL may have put people off taking up real competition driving! Its so damn hard I wonder how many kids thought "If I'm terrible at this I'll never be any good at at real motorsport...."

Some sources suggest DK wanted to include a 'trainer' or Formula Junior option in GPL to soften the blow of but it was rushed out so this never happened... All we got were 'detuned' F1 cars that were still quite difficult....

Having said that I think GPL helped me a bit when I got behind the wheel of a mk II escort for the first time on a loose surface. Stupidly I remember thinking 'wow this is almost as accurate as GPL... no, hang on, this is REAL'

rfactor for me is the game. Currently spending most of my time on it with the TCL mod. I'd love it if there was something like that but set in the mid-nineties (or TCL extended itself to there) as that's the period of touring cars I grew up with.

Quite like the 'Race' series and think they're under-rated a tad, but the modding community isn't as big (or good as a whole) as the rfactor one.

Rfactor is in someways a 'dream' game in that it can be anything you want it to be. Trouble is it depends on the skill of the modder - some mods are great, some not so great.

The Grand Prix Classics 1979 mod was meant to be GPL 2. It is a brilliant mod (with a 170 page manual!) but it hasn't attracted quite the same following as GPL.

I do seem to be blazing a trail here, but I don't really like GT mods!

Some of them are very good, enduracers being the main one, that mod could and should perhaps be charged for as it so vey well done.

But some of my fave mods on Rf1 are rallycross, but noone plays it anywhere. CORR which is superb, some of the short oval UK stock car mods are very intricate and realistic.

I really enjoy the Historix mod, GP79 was a hugely popular mod for a time and I spent many an hour in servers never seeming to tire of lapping Kyalami ever quicker

The F1-85 was superbly done physics wise, perhaps the most immersive of them all, but was sadly only half finished in terms of physics and sound, but Good Lord those cars were hard to drive, but again so very realistic when you compare them to modern sim F1 titles. But trying to lap somewhere like jerez on full bosst on qually tyres really got your blood pumping, superb mod that.

But for me the best was F1-91. I spent hundreds of hours lapping tracks in this mod, a little racing online but got fed up with the alien freaks and Williams/Ferrari no gearstick noobs.

F1-91 is superb. The cars are all different, the tyres work properly, the aero works well, subtle differences in setup work well (my main complaint against Enduracers) and the sounds are simply magnificent. the honda V12 I doubt could be better done by anyone, perhaps the best and most realistic sound I have heard in any game.

Other mods worthy a mention are F5000, the Historic GT 70's mod which was very good.
