'HANS compatible' seats
Ive just replaced an out of (FIA) date Sparco with a new one of same model. This new one boasts being 'HANS compatible' but what makes it so? It looks identical! There is a small FIA hologram attached to the date of manufacture sticker, though.
Further to that, are we only supposed to use HANS devices with seats that say they are 'compatible'? If using HANS becomes compulsory will a vast number of seats have to be changed as well? In single seaters the seats are not normally high back so presumably there is no requirement for compatible seat.....

I bet it's a pure marketing ploy, or something subtle like the belt holes are in a slightly different position giving them "an optimal position and angle" or some other marketing BS.
It's like saying food is 95% Fat Free!!!! to disguise the fact that it's 5% fat! |

I think you will find that a "HANS Compatible" seat is one that is not "not HANS compatible".
The issue you could get on some seats is the back of the HANS device interfering with the seat and pushing your head forward more than would be comfortable. This would be unlikely but worth checking, even on a HANS compatible seat. |

Cheers for that. I had a devious thought that maybe FIA were making seat manufacturers apply for cerftification or suchlike. Then when HANS devices become compulsory we not only have to buy the device but also a seat certified to be compatible with it! Of course HANS may not become compulsory but....
So we are saying that the manufacturers are the ones deciding whether a seat is compatible or not?

FIA standard 8855-1999 makes no mention of HANS devices at all. Here's what it says on "lifing"
The usable life of an FIA homologated seat will be 5 years from the date of manufacture indicated on the seat label. An extension of up to 2 further years may be authorised where the seat has been returned to the manufacturer for re-validation. Extensions will be indicated by an additional label affixed to the seat identifying the date on which the seat eligibility ceases, and validated by the manufacturer's quality inspection stamp. So you can make your mind up whether "HANS compatible" is a special standard or marketing puff |
