Hillclimb/Sprint
Hi - I'm looking to enter my Mg Midget for several Luffield events next season and have a technical question relating to my car.
I am replacing the existing 1098 engine with a 1275 engine bored out to 1330 plus a few further mods and estimate that the output would be around 100bhp at the wheels My question is would the 1098 gearbox do the job? Thanks in advance. |

I would post this in the historics sub-forum or find an MG forum elsewhere..

unless it's a very early 1098 Midget, the ribcase gearbox is the same as the 1275 ones. Casing, shafts and bearings are all identical, the early ones have 'A' type gears and the later ones 'B' type. The difference was a change to the helical cut angle, supposedly in search of quieter running, but i don't know if it made a difference to the strength. Feel free to PM me if you want more info.
I'd be surprised if you can get 100 at the wheels from a 1330, more like at the flywheel. But it all depends on whose rolling road you use ! |
