Stunning Hillclimb Result at Gurston

I'm just in through the door from Gurston Down, after witnessing one of the most stunning drives i've ever seen, definitely the most impressive drive I've ever seen in Speed Hillclimb. The odd thing was, it was at a local clubbie and in the unsung class of up to 1400cc Mod Prod Sports.

This morning the Gurston <1400cc Mod Prod Sports record stood @ 32.66. Before this morning, Brodie Branch had never driven the track.

His first practice was 32.48, second practice 32.22. He then went out and on his first ever competitive run on the hill, demolished the 5 year old class record by nearly 4 tenths of a second (believe his time was 32.28) !

Also well done also to Baz Pitt, the consumate gentleman of hillclimbing, on his FTD. And also special mention to Johnathan Gates who finally managed to crack the Mod Prod Sports 1401-2000cc class record.

I think everybody @ Gurston has decided to go out and buy Chrysler Vipers after Nadine Geary won a special award for leaving the best tyremarks in Gurstons History. All I'll say is imagine planting the throttle on a Viper GTS, and leaving two perfect pitch black strips the entire length of the tyre warming area. It's the first time I can recall a driver getting a standing ovation before reaching the startline

Oh, and not forgetting Scarecrow Cannell who proved that 30 secs is possible and that the class record is possible.

Well done BARC SW for one of the best weekends club motorsport I can remember.

couldnt agree more with you there, it was a cracking weekend and certain ghosts from 2 years ago were laid to rest for one driver in particular. She still has my vote for driver of the day for getting back in the car after her "little off"
Another bravery award would have to go to the guy driving the XR3i on his first meeting and then getting into Rod Thornes westfield for the sunday meet because he couldnt run the escort on sunday. As we said at the time with the 2 cars so alike!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! what could possibly go wrong.
Cant wait to see the brayspeed video of the viper tyre warming. I was trolley dollying at the time so only saw the end result from back in the assembly area.

Blackcrow

Brodie's a good friend and we came down to Gurston for a bit of Fun with the 3 Caterham Busa's, He asked how to drive the hill and was told flat out from the start, lift for hollow, flat to karoussl and turn in as fast as you can. quick into ashes and flat out up to the finish

We were all left stunned wondering how the hell Brodie did the time on his 1st run and were all playing catch up for the rest of the day . Jonathan gates record time was a 17.10 split and hes been going to Gurston for 16 years, which shows how fast Brodies split's were.
Fantastic time's just good job he doesn't come to the national A rounds much as he has done low 52's at Loton and 56's at Harewood both of which are under the national records

Weather was excellent compared to the alternative of the Doune rains and the Viper burnout entertainment was superb.

I was Cheif Paddock and didn't see a problem.

We are talking about a man who gave a Marshal his first Gurston FTD trophy for recovering his suspension cover.

If the upper paddock area is not clear for the return, we do take care to signal the drivers to cool it, and Basil can always be trusted to act upon that instruction without question. Of all the drivers I've met throughout the sport, I can't think of any who would take your comments more personally. And for whom they are less well founded.

Superb stuff Tony!

The cameo of Gurston is so atmospheric.

B1ackcr0w:
Got to know Basil recently and as you say, a gentleman, and I know he would respond to instruction. I agree entirely with your comments about any other suggestions.

That's an excellent clip, brayspeed, and if anything makes me think 'how do they do it' even more than usual. Faff about getting to the line, warming up, etc, several eye-level views of Simon's knees(!), wait for a clear up, then finally to the line and in a few seconds you're hitting Hollow with a bit of a lift at 150mph... Not normal mortals, you'd think, until you meet them all and find they couldn't be more normal.

Back to the original post, and it took a while to realize that the first climb of the hill was under the record. Now it's not the hardest hill to learn, but even so, that level of commitment to Hollow and into Karousel on first sight is something pretty special.

I've now removed the off-topic part of this thread - I should have done that sooner.

If anyone sees this happening, that's what the warn button is for, please don't discuss it within the thread, as it counts as much the same.

Discussion about Gurston, please continue. Discussion about posters will be removed.

To continue with the original theme of this thread , Brodie went to shelsley on sat for the vintage meeting as part of the 7 owners club contingent as it is a round of there championship

Again 1st time he had been to Shelsley, He finished the day on 29.66 ,which is a stunning result for a 1400cc Caterham,

I was watching him from Bottom Ess and the odd thing was how unspectacular his runs were then seeing the sub 30 times pop up when the bigger capacity cars were struggling and pushing hard to get down to 30.

Very, very impressive on a first visit, wish I'd seen it. Shelsley's quite a challenging course in a Caterham, so to find that level of commitment so quickly speaks of serious talent.

Brodie's terrific performance at Gurston got a quote from the commentary during one of his runs at Shelsley.

Once again a superb video..
Thats the first time I have seen Tim Mason's accident in its entirety(sp?)..

Makes it even more amazing watching that that he walked away from it ...

And a cpl of "our lads" can be seen commenting on the recovery techniques(it was a difficult recovery and was well handled)..

Once again.......Thanks.....
