No. Prokop forms a team with Østberg this year. They both have WRC17-spec-cars.

Hoonigan has started pre-season testing. With all the posts from Bakkerud and Block saying during the last season that it was a learning year, I think it is pretty sure Hoonigan will be back.

There is footage of the supposedly RX Polo of Solberg being tested on the Facebook page of Maxime Brossault

Another video shows two Polo's, Solberg and Johan both testing in the dark. Cars sound great and look pretty quick!

I was watching those videos last night. The Polo has a very aggressive note on the overrun, very reminiscent of the DS3: perhaps a clue that there is a Pipo engine under the bonnet again?

I actually saw Petter at the Dirt 4 launch yesterday: sadly I was unable to get close enough to ask him any questions about the specification of the new cars!

EKS´s driver announcement was planned for today, but it has been postponed. Difficult to say who it is. Heikkinen? Scheider? Larsson? Nitiss? Kevin Hansen? Definitively more candidates than seats...

I doubt Hansen is the second driver. It is a real lottery though to guess who the driver might be.

Heikkinen wrote on facebook a few days ago that he would announce his plans soon. He posted updates from testing with EKS in Mettet in december.

Asked by Motorsport.com if the Polos were brand new rallycross cars or using existing platforms from Volkswagen’s stable, Solberg said: “It’s a combination, for sure. I have a lot of confidence and it will be good.”

New engine layout for 2017

The Norwegian star also revealed that the new cars have transversally-mounted engines. Previous Polos raced in World RX by Marklund Motorsport and Kristoffersson Motorsport have used longitudinally-mounted units, similar to Solberg’s double-title winning Citroen DS3.

The transverse engine orientation falls in line with Volkswagen Motorsport’s existing technology, a layout generally preferred by manufacturer-backed teams to be more akin to the road going versions of the car.

“Of course it changes a lot of things you know, but it’s just adaptation of driving style and it [transverse] fits me better,” said Solberg, before referencing his unique setup preferences.

“It will still be soft! We’re working a lot with inertia, weight distribution and centre of gravity, all these things. We will be better than before.”

Just seen a post on Rallycross tv facebook page and it has a few more pics and vids from the test. From the pics it looks very much like a 2016 Polo R WRC, the main give away being the rear shot with the boot open and no cooling system to be seen.

Interesting news that Solberg will now be driving a car with a transverse engine setup. Glad to see Petter mentioning the car will still be soft, hopefully that means we will get to see plenty of sideways Polo!

A Polo with WRC arches look good anyway. But a bit of marketing talk he preferred transverse layouts as he could have build the DS3 transverse too if that's true?

True. Made me wonder about it too.

He did use UNIC transmissions though and they don't make transmissions for transverse engines. Their stuff is quite reliable, cheap compared to other transmissions I guess and their headquarters is in Säffle, not far from Torsby. The guy in charge used to work in a WRC team I believe.

The interview with Pernilla Solberg in the Racecar Engineering special (in 2014) covered the subject of transverse layouts, and she mentioned then that it restricted them in terms of transmission options: and that going inline enabled them to use UNIC.

PSRX used a lot of "local" suppliers. I wonder if that will be the case with the Polo?

Aside from the issue of finding a transmission that is up to the job (which doesn't seem to be a problem based on the number of teams who are transverse now), going transverse seems to be better all around.

When Solberg said the car would be a mix of old and new, I think he could mean that the WRC cars need to be modified for RX use and that he might incorporate some of the designs he has had developed while evolving the DS3 through the years. Some things are obvious such as rear mounted cooling systems, but I think also there are unique solutions in other areas such as the suspension system.

The rear suspention was completely redone and moved from multilink to McPherson for 2017, to save on weight and possibly address the broken rear shocks he suffered on several occasions.

Also, I believe either PSRX or their transmission supplier Unic mentioned that a longi engine had significant benefits such as more room for a good manifold design, better cooling on the hot side and lower frictional losses.
I still think a VW Motorsport transverse build will completely match any other transverse build though.
