Roger Penske said his team are looking into it. Interestingly his other drivers are no longer using the new sidepod part that Helio and Simon were running with earlier today.

Is that the same for all Chevy teams, or was this a Penske modification?

Prior to this Al Unser Jr. had already borrowed a car from Pagan Racing but to no avail. In the end the outcome was neither Emerson Fittipaldi or Al Unser Jr., the winners of the previous three Indy 500s, failed to qualify.
Definitely the car that qualifies.

In 2011 remember Junquiera qualified the #41 car, but for the race the non-qualifying RHR was put into the #41 car for the race (and started from the back)

That was 1995, but if Penske had been able to qualify the back-up Rahal-Hogan Lola's, then those are the cars they would have had to rac(ie..they couldn't change back to a Penske chassis for the race)

Remember the back-up cars are classed as seperate entries (hence why when Al Jnr was trying to qualify the Lola he was running as #11T, and Emmo made his late run in #9T, as they were classed as seperate entries to the #9 and the #11)

Was it #9T and #11T or #9X and #11X ?

But isn't this no different to an F1 driver, taking out the T-car to qualify, though in the case of the 1995 500, the drivers used T-cars from other teams. So would that mean they'd be required to race in those loan T-cars if they had qualified?

The car that qualified would need need to be raced - by any driver the team wants to put in it (provided they meet the IMS driving standards/ qualifications)

I must have missed that bit. Would have saved me asking the same question twice,

Just as well neither Little Al or Emo qualified in the Rahal-Hogan cars. I don't think either Bobby Rahal or Carl Hogan would have been too pleased if either of the loan cars had crashed during the race.

Rahal-Hogan in 1995 were re-paying the favour that Penske did for them in 1994.

In 1994 Penske loaned Rahal/Hogan Racing a pair of Penske-Ilmor's after their Lola-Honda's proved too slow early in the month. Rahal and Mike Groff qualified safely in the loaned Penske-Ilmor's and raced them... Bobby ended up 3rd but Mike Groff crashed out in the loaner early on.

This is all excellent stuff and I've learned something. Discussions like this make motorsport so fascinating but my initial question has hi-jacked the thread and it's time to get back on topic but just before we do, here is a pic of Bobby Rahall in the MGD liveried Penske.
