Ford Escort Cosworth/WRC's popping noise?
What is the popping noise made by the old Ford Escort Cosworth/WRC when the throttle is lifted? I would assume it's the turbo but does anybody have an actual explanation?

Not sure, but it could be the turbo anti-lag.

Perfect link mr Sud! It's also the reason alot of turbo cars have an allmost constant flame at the end of the exaust on throttle overun |

Those things are damn abusive on the turbo and just about every other part in the engine. Wouldn't it be better to use some sort of hydraulic pump or electric motor to keep the thing spinning
|

Anti-lag not so abusive to engine, as in state round rallys here in west australia, turbo can last 5 rallies or more !
Anti-lag can be 'tuned' by altering the amount of re-tard and the such, but it is more abusive to clutch and driveline. As you come out of corner and plant it, near instant boost. So you either go somewhere or damage something. Still is definitely worth the trouble. |
