Ligier's Return

Notice over on DSC that Ligier have developed a VdV car that'll debut this weekend in the hands of Jonathan Cochet. Interestingly it's designated as a JS-49 - aren't Ligier sportscars supposed to be evenly numbered?

Wonderful. I loved the JS2 and particularly the gorgeous JS3. Good to see them heading back into sports cars.

A Ligier-Renault to take on the peugeots would be nice!

Interesting that they are returning via the FIA-CN rules sportsracer market...

But it makes sense to learn things (and to sell cars while you're at it!) in what has become a very popular series (V de V) that could serve as a springboard for building an LMP3 or LMP2 chassis derived from the data gathered from this program...

I would assume that Ligier would also consider eventually racing that car in the Britsports Open Sportsracer Series as well, since it would be compliant to compete there...

From www.grandprix.com:

...Tico Martini continued to build Formule Renault chassis with much success until 2004 when he sold the company to Guy Ligier and anew assault began on Formula 3.
Since then didn't hear much about this project.

That series looks very cool, they should make something like this in the states, there are already a lot of C and D sports racers and Grand Am Cup/SWC cars could make up the GT fields...it could be quite huge...and I love the all endurance formula...

The overall polish of the car really stood out for me. It looks like and LMP2 just begging to be let off the leash.

It's also nice to see Ligier back as a name - and in a sort of racing where there's still a degree of character. Seeing something that brings back the memories of '79 through '81 can't be bad at all.

Only thing is, imagine the car with an LMP2 style rear wing etc. - would it still look as good...?

To be honest I don't think it would hurt the car that much. If you look at the rear view on DSC (or on Ligier's site) and then compare it with some of the shots of the RS Spyder from a similar angle at Laguna Seca the rear wing doesn't look terrifically different.

Well, following the flurry (perhaps too strong a word) of interest in the new Ligier, it seems to have been something of a non-event with no sign of either Cochet or Ligier at Magny Cours this weekend.

Any VdeV afficianados know what might have gone on here? Or do we have to chalk up the JS49 as yet another mythical car?

The JS49 was entered only in the Modern Endurance Sprint Races. Jonathan Cochet was second quickest in qualifying for the two races, ans finished in second place behind a Norma M20 Evo entered by Norbert Santos and driven by Di Benedetto/Vilarino, so for a first race, short of development, it is not so bad.

All makes sense now, and indeed, not a bad showing at all. Just mildly annoying that the VdeV site doesn't carry results of it!

...and looking at it now I see I may have grotesquely maligned them in accusing them of not publishing the modern sprint results...
