should driver aids be banned?

with all the current ho ha about reducing the sports current costs should traction control/ launch starts be banned, i for one think they should. after all most of the trick to keeping 900 horses on the track was by very terms the definition of a racing driver!

Welcome to the forum wayne

I see your starting with an easy question too. Very few would like to see this stuff stay on the cars, but don't hold your breath. While the manufactures are making decisions instead of us fans they will stay for a long time.

All aids should be banned, as should semi-automatic gearboxes. Bring back stick-shifting!!

After 2 years of FULLY-automatic gearboxes and traction control resulting in cars you only have to point and shoot, I'd lvoe to see a total blanket ban on this stuff, but the problem is enforcement.

No one can be sure what kinds of systems are being used, and what benefits are being gained. Look, for example, at Renault's Launch Control system operating off the lights themselves, which was promptly banned once it was clear what an advantage they got.

We definately want slick tyres though, and, at the very most, semi-automatic geearboxes. There is too much now. Whatever next? Automatic brakes? Or an ideal line painted on teh track, like in the Geoff Crammond games?

The fact is, being the pinnacle of motorsports...the automotive industry needed them and we need them as numerous cars tend to adopt whatever developments that is being developed and used in formula1 cars

Why don't they implement the electronic bans they tried to introduce early in 2000, that the teams complained so much about.

Semi-Auto boxes, not really bothered, neither am i with grooved tyres really.

Ban traction control
Ban Automatic gearboxes
But keep the grooved tires, as they are for safety, and they have limited the speeds and laptimes.

FIA Considers Driver Aid Clampdown

Governing body still pushing for cost-cuts

Traction control and telemetry could be outlawed from Formula 1 for the start of the new season, according to this week's AUTOSPORT magazine.

Motorsport governing body the FIA is making a last-ditch attempt to introduce cost-cutting measures this year by calling a meeting of the 10 F1 team bosses for two weeks' time.

AUTOSPORT understands that the FIA may consider taking a strict line on banning driver aids, which would over-rule the fact that traction control is effectively allowed in the techical regulations.

The stance could also make expensive electronic systems like telemetry illegal if they are judged to be driver aids.

Other considerations include a stricter enforcement of scrutineering rules to ensure that teams cannot change major parts on their cars, including items like brake ducts, between qualifying and the races.

A radical proposal to make F1 a single-engine supply formula could also be put forward for 2004.

FIA president Max Mosley is pushing hard to reduce costs in F1. He was disappointed that the teams failed to agree on any meaningful and immediate cost cuts in a meeting last month.

BAR team boss David Richards has backed Mosley's stance on cost-cuts. "We have got to be open-minded about it," he said. "A group of people so close to the coal face as the team principals sometimes don't come to the right conclusions. And sometimes you need a facilitator from the outside to assist you in that process."

ENDS:/

I just wish the FIA would make up their minds! Although I think banning traction control is a BAD idea, it will only make make the gap to Ferrari even bigger.

FIA Considering Ban on Driver's Aid

The FIA and the 10 F1 teams are going to have a meeting in two weeks to consider banning driver's aid such as traction control and telemtry boxes to cut down on cost to go along with a one engine rule in 2004.

Interesting, but in my opinion unworkable unless the FIA have some electronics genius who would be able to police every team. I'm all in favour of cutting costs, especially in the current financial climate, but don't see this as a viable step forwards. It's more like Max throwing a few spanners in the works to get people talking once again?

No chance of policing, as Stephen says... Plus... this is not CART or IRL - technology should be encouraged! What's next? Everyone has to race with the same chassis and engine? That would make it cheap.

Carbed engines, no wings, no electronics. Let the technology go nuts from there.

I really don't think F1 makes a substantial contribution to the current development of road cars.

Twig, the grooved tyres of today are just as "sticky" if not more than proper slicks. If grooved tyres have limited laptimes how come the JPM managed to set the fastest ever lap this season?
