Europe's fastest race series will have a new name next season, becoming the Stock Car Speed Association (SCSA) Racing. The series, which has been called Days of Thunder after the 1990 Tom Cruise film, is hugely popular with race fans and families with its high speed, action packed racing.

"Because the series has gained such a popular following the time is now right to give it its own identity," said Rockingham Chairman Gerry DeNotto. "The Days of Thunder name helped kick start the series as it did exactly what it said on the box, but with the new company to develop and build a professional race series, we needed a professional race series name. We chose SCSA Racing as the new name because of the American Speed Association (ASA) stock cars we use and we will be announcing some very exciting trans Atlantic action very soon. SCSA will continue to provide the same high speed racing action it has been giving the paying public for the past four seasons, with more cars and more high profile sponsors."

The events held at Rockingham on the first Sunday of every month will also be renamed to Thunder Sunday at The Rock.

Joe Dickinson, CEO Rockingham: "Because the race series will be run as a separate company from Rockingham next year, we had to differentiate between the race championship and the Rockingham events. Thunder Sunday at The Rock is the perfect name for the family orientated entertainment our customers come to Rockingham for. The format will basically remain, but we will be adding much more variety to what you see both on and off the track. "On track we will always have a guest race, Legends are one of the series who wish to take part and we are looking at some other very interesting additions for 2005. We will also vary the race distances for both the SCSA cars and Pick Ups. The music element will continue with high profile artists from pop and rock and, again with variety in mind, we are looking at, for example, comedy at one of the events."

The 2005 SCSA Racing championship will boast a prize fund of at least $1.1million, a 10% increase on 2004. On top of that, the top three drivers in the series will have the opportunity to compete in an American Speed Association (ASA) race in North America at the end of the year.

The 2005 SCSA Champion will receive a fully funded drive with an established team for one ASA race. The second placed driver will get a 50% funded drive and the third placed driver 25% funding.

“This is a great opportunity for our top drivers to race with the leading stock car teams in the United States,” said SCSA Race Director Mark Claussner. “The prize fund currently stands at $1.1million but we are actively working to increase this over the winter and is a mark of our commitment to producing the top motor racing series in Europe. This prize fund, including the chance to drive in the United States, will help attract top teams and drivers to compete on the two fastest circuits in Europe next year.”

The first race of the 2005 SCSA season will take place at Rockingham in Northamptonshire on Sunday 1st May, with the first of two visits to the 2-mile oval at Eurospeedway Lausitz in Germany on the 29th May.

The ASA series is on deaths door here in the U.S. They are filling for bankruptcy and if no buyer or sponsor arrives it will be gone next year. Here's an article if you want to see it:

I hope most of those guys like St. Amant, Garvey, Butch Miller, Pyle, Cywinski, which were the backbone of that series get ride somewhere next year.

I'd almost bet that most of the ASA guys wind up in Hooters Pro-Cup. Its a pretty strong series and seems to be continually growing. Plus that series has a dedicated sponsor. A few may end up in the truck series. A lot of those guys have been a round for a while and will probally find somewhere else to go. All and all its a dissapointing end to such a well established series. Mark Martin, Alan Kulwicki, and tons of other drivers got there starts in ASA. The ASA races were a good show too. I went to a race at Hawkeye Downs in Cedar Rapids a year ago and got to get autographs from a lot of the drivers. It was probally one of best races I've ever seen. I was pretty dissapointed when they abandoned the short tracks this year.
