$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$, eg. Lots Why can't GP2 be like it was back in 2005/2006 when yes they were a few 'pay drivers' and 'journeymen' but the majority of the grid was there on the merit of their talent. For example in 2005, Rosberg, Kovalinen, Speed, Carroll, Jani In 2006, Hamilton, Premat, Glock, Piquet Jnr, di Grassi.. |

not so much this season, chunty. keeping the things reliable cost rather more than projected so (iirc) the prices have gone up a bit more than plain old inflation. noticed an influx of new pitstop toys towards the end of the season mind you so things can't be that tight chez 3.5
i suspect the prices are meeting a little in the middle - the cheapest last minute gp2 deals can be had for top drive 3.5 money. but that's entirely unscientific, and if you can afford a top 3.5 drive then you would do that, wouldn't you?! and the "there on the merit of their talent" thing... you mean, the decent talent had access to enough money to be able to pay for it because it was pre-economic fallover? |

Well I can't say about pre or post economic impacts but like you say if you can have a competitive race winning drive in a series where you will get fairly good exposure or a back of the grid drive in a series where you'll be able to do naff all and hardly any exposure, I know what I would choose whether I was allegedly in front of F1 team managers or not....

anyone heard the vandoorne testing with art rumour? that one's interesting, given that the drivers entorage aren't keen on the series and the art team have had a, er, hard season.

No....
And indeed!!! However, I have this huge suspicion that if an absolute ace driver comes into GP2 in a properly set up team/car, that driver will stand a very good chance of cleaning up such is the level at present...... |

Not surprised Vandoorne is considering GP2, the car is so much closer in terms of performance to F1 then FR3.5 and for next year the costs will be lower as they keeping same car so for a full season its looking likely to cost £750,000 to £1,200,000, which a lot less than this year were the cheapest deal you could get even last minute.com was around the £1,000,000 mark, and that would have only bought you a seat at one of the backmarker GP2 teams such as Lazarus or Trident. So maybe due to the reduced costs McLaren is thinking of GP2 as a better option than FR3.5 for next year, and we might actually see a more talent orientated grid next year? |

lol, i'll say.
i think the key's in the "silly season" bit of the title, though some may be taking it a bit literally |

Silly indeed! Iirc there have only ever been very few drivers who haven't had to pay for their seats in GP2 and are there on talent alone, (Bird this year.) So whoever said why can't it be like it was back whenever us talking through a home in his hat!

Martsenko is going to test with Campos & ART(!?), but much more shockingly Nagulin is truly going to test with Lazarus! The guy just recently won his first ever race because the leaders had reliability problems and it was in Abarth, which isn't very strong right now.
It's all from Russia's Autosport, which is owned by Kosatchenko, so it's pretty reliable. |

as in petrov's old manager? she was posing around at barcelona in various awnings and at the front of the grid. is she involved with managing martsenko or something?

most of the big talent names back in the day were bankrolled by either a f1 team or an anonymous source of a bag of cash, or such like. those situations are a lot rarer now. hulkenberg for example always had the cash to buy the best and most competitive seats in every series he raced in. he also had the talent to turn it into a title though you've got to wonder whether he or grosjean would have been able to do the same thing nowadays?
