Firman's Nationality?
I've seen a few articles about Ralph Firman identifying him as being Irish - the latest being from F1 live. Can anyone clear this up? ITV have referred to him being from Norfolk (just like Martin Brundle), so maybe he has Irish parentage?

I'm a bit confused about that too... The timing screens after the sessions say "IRE" - but ITV always say he's from Norfolk... so who knows?

His father Ralph, boss and founder of Van Diemen racing cars at Snetterton is English, also Norfolk. Angie also works at Van Diemen, near to the family home in Attleborough.

i think im right in saying that if you look on Firmans crash helmet there is a shamrock on the front, so who knows??? but he'll always be Attleborough finest... then again theres not much competition.

Yeah, but with his mum being Irish, he has a bit of Irish blood in him so is probably displaying the fact he is proud of it...and it will please EJ of course!

Probably at Eddie Jordan's suggestion, and to provide a bit of variety.

So he can represent two countries at the same time? I know it is highly unlikely to happen, but what national anthem will they play if he wins?
Btw, F1racing.net has him listed as representing "Great Britain". |

Theyre all considered "British" by the Speed channel. But the WRC coverage notes the difference between english, scottish, welsh, and irish. Weird.

The Irish Republic isn't part of Great Britain, although Northern Ireland is. To discuss it anymroe would be talking about both Religion and Politics, so we'll leave it.
It's similar to the situation in football then, where a lot of English-born players represent Ireland simply due to having parents or granparents from there (in fact, I'd qualify for Ireland that way, but, trust me, the Irish soccer team can do much better). The Jamaican soccer team is almost entirely English-born as well. |

I've heard that he has an Irish passport and maybe he had an Irish racing license or something too.
Eddie Irvine liked to confuse the administrators too. He was officially British (being from Northern Ireland), but his racing licence was issued from Dublin (being in Rep. of Ireland). This coupled with driving for Jordan, having 'Ireland' on the car and driving in testing with a tricolour on the car at Jordan led to confusion. They put the Irish flag up on the podium in Melbourne in 1996 too. Its the Jack Charlton syndrome again, when the team used to sing the national anthem, God Save the Taoiseach. |

LOL, I know Ireland isn't part of Great Britain, and if I was interpreted as insinuating that it is, then that was not the intention at all!
Hakki, I thought Firman did pretty well today. He was performing very well against Fisichella (who was on a different strategy, but regardless of that, Firman took advantage of the situation when Fisi was lapped by someone, and passed him), and scored a point in the end. Not bad. Last edited by R; 4 May 2003 at 20:29. |
