Ginetta G16

Hello, who can help me with period pictures of Ginetta G16's, which drivers, which chassis with what engine, technical details during the 68-72 period? Did they ever used Cosworth BD type engines? Most cars now run BMW engines, but what engines did they really run in period? Thanks in advance, Emile

Welcome, Emile. The History forum would be more appropriate, so I'm moving it there. I, too. am interested in the G16, a very rare car. If this develops, it would be a worthy addition to the Chassis History Archive.

G16s mostly ran in period with either BMW,FVA ,FVC V8BRM, and one was fitted with a Buick but not until 1970 ish

I owned 2 G16s in the 70s. One was the Brian Alexander car bought from Mr. Bickerstaff in Preston and sold to my schoolmate Peter Cook.
The other was less engine(ex FV) bought bfrom Belfast. I remember flying over to see it and being shocked by the soldier presence.

Hello Chris, any chance you remember who owned/raced the Belfast car, original colors of the cars, chassis numbers? And where it went after your ownership?

Looking through my copy of the John Rose book, it appears that just 8 G16's were built, of which 7 survive (chassis 001 destroyed at Monterey). Apart from BMW engines, they also used Ford, Coventry Climax and BRM. One also used an Oldsmobile(?) V8. It seems that there were two fitted with BRM units and known as G16A. Ian Tee's and the works car driven by Bev Bond. However, it is also apparent that the works cars were tried withn different units, so this could turn into an interesting exercise, suitable for the chassis archive. Do any survive with the original T bar supported windscreen?

I found 4: - chassis 16/001 sold to Art Allen (was US importer for Ginetta), crashed in 1969, restored by Trevor Needham in 1978, currently BMW engine and FT200 gearbox
- chassis 16/003 originally Oldsmobile V8, now Rover/Buick 4500cc and FG400 gearbox
- chassis 16/005 Motoring News/Ian Tee car, original V8 BRM, now BMW - FT200
- chassis 16/007 originally FVC, crashed at some time and rebuild early nineties with BMW and FT200

Ed Tyack still hillclimbs the car originally owned by his father Gerry. Now has a BMW engine but I believe started life with an FVA

I found some more details on engine specification in Bob Walklett's book, "Ginetta, the inside story" but no chassis numbers;
John Burton's car: Cosworth FVC
John Bamford's car: BMW
Jeremy Richardson's: Climax
Ian Tee: BRM
Works car: BRM
Art Allen: 2 liter Coventry Climax
Bev Bond: BRM
Gerry Tyack: Cosworth FVA

this is their info

So if 8 were built, they were originally with Art Allen, Burton, Bamford, Tee, Richardson, Moffett plus the works car, so whose was the other one?

Does anyone know the chassis number of the Moffett car? I have just come across an entry by S.N. Moffett of Newtownabbey in a Ginetta G16A at Kirkistown 27 March 1971. The engine is given as 1798cc, suggesting a FVC.

I used was the weekend mechanic for Ian Tee. The engine was a 2 litre (Tasman) V8 BRM with side exhaust system. This engine was very difficult to get running on all 8, too rich, too lean, faulty ignition pickup,......Things got better once the improvised exhaust system was changed for a proper tubular system.
The car was delivered with the then required full windscreen. Rapidly changed for the small screen. Later that year the tail was cut short as the lugage box requirements were dropped.
The works car used a BRM Tasman engine with central exhaust.

Where is it advertised? I don't think Martin Phaff ever had anything to do with G16s...

OK, I've found it now...This car, or rather the parts of it were built by MP in about 1993, but it was never completed. At some stage it went to Brian Moody, who also did nothing with it. It seems to have gone, possibly via Spadge Hopkins to Emile Robyns in Belgium. It's never been a whole car so it can't really be described as 'restored'. As for the chassis number, Dare have built several 'continuation' G16s, but as far as I know this one has no Walklett input.
