Does anyone have any information In Keith Barrington? He is my grandad and I want to trace his motorsport history. He raced from 1968 to about 1976 and then again in 1980 but in the 750mc. I am only interested in the Days were he raced a mini in the Special saloons. Thanks.

I can assure you its 63 as i have the programme infront of me.

The Rob /Ron Mason comes up quite a lot in my collection sometimes there is a second letter to the name if only i could work that out .

To my mind 63 is more likely to be Ron .

I beleive that Ken Costello is that man involved with the MBG V8'S , he was a long time Mini man of great repute in the 1960 s.

The Imp being 875 must have been a near standard car as developement of the 998 's may not have started in earnest in 63 .

Does the LMB popular have anything to do with Mike Berman of Berpop fame ?

I thought that at first (especially as the programme was from Mallory & Mike being a Leicester man), but I think LMB would be referring to an independant front suspension conversion that was popular (no pun intended) with the E93A. (LMB were in fact the conversion designers initials, who I think was Len Bailey, who went onto bigger things).

Alan Brown should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
1971

Continuing my trawl through MNs for 1971.

In its review of club racing in 1971 MN (20-1-72) said that 1971 had “produced a couple of exciting hybrids” namely Mick Hill’s Boss Capri and Norman Abbott’s Escort. And it raised queries over safety and expense. It claimed the most successful saloon driver was Mick Hill (23 wins), followed by Gerry Marshall (20) in Vauxhalls and Escort Mexico.

Norman Abbott and John Emmins – Escort FVA 2150 – fully independent rear suspension and rear-mounted FT200 – pink – ingenious though it is any further development on this theme are going to put costs beyond the means of the average clubman and are therefore not entirely welcome” (MN 20-1-72)

Dave Brodie – Escort – car on show in Dusseldorf, went to Ford Germany’s competition dept at Cologne where it was fitted with a new ZF gearbox and 2-litre Charles Lucas-built BDA, “about 225 bhp and bags of torque (Brodie), then tested at Zolder, to be raced with Racing Services engine (MN 25-2-71) (“capacity a close-guarded secret” MN 8-4-71) – often quoted as 2150 – converted to group 2 specification for the support race at British GP (Racing Services 1986 BDA) – back to 2150 BDA – Brodie had three racing Escorts, two for sale, including the original Run Baby Run club racer minus engine and gearbox for £1100 and another with independent rear end for £1400 in rolling chassis form (MN 18-11-71)
“Brodie Roadie” MN described (15-7-71) a road version of Run Baby Run with a standard 1600 BDA and gearbox. The shell was gutted and completely rebuilt; painted black with a thin gold coachline; bulged wheelarches to cover 7½-inch Minilites; lowered suspension etc. It cost the owner £2250. Brodie said that more could be done to future cars eg Racing Services 1800 BDA, independent rear suspension, automatic gearbox etc. “what the customer wants and can afford”. How many were built?

Phil de Banks – Escort Twin Cam 1.8 or 1670 (ex LuMo)
Roger Bell (Bill Blydenstein) – Viva GT 2.2 or 2.6
Adrian Bethell, Sheffield – Escort TC 1.8, built 1970, for sale, £750 (MN 8-7-71)
Gerry and Graham Birrell – Escort TC 1880
Jenny Birrell – Escort TC 1970
John Bloomfield – Escort BDA 2.1 – bought the original “Run Baby Run” from Dave Brodie to be fitted with a turbocharged 1.6 engine (MN 9-12-71)
Keith Bowmaker (Auto-tune) – Perdal Escort TC 1762 – lightweight – built 1970 – for sale, £1100 or offers (MN 16-12-71)
Charlie Bradley – Escort TC 1.8
Glen Cambell – Escort V6 3.0
Jeff Churchill (from rallying) – Escort TC 1.9 (engine built up by Ron Douglas)
Ken Coffey – Escort TC 1.8
Bill Cox – Capri V8 Chrysler 6.2
Mike Crabtree (Willment) – Escort RS 2.1 – also borrowed Viva GT 2.2 (Bill Blydenstein)
Graham Craker – Mini Clubman Ford 1650 twin cam
Brian Cutting – Escort Martin V8 3.0 – metallic blue – also driven by Norman Abbott
Bill Dryden (SMT) – Viva GT 2.3 and later 2.5
Bob Fox – Mini Clubman-Ford twin cam 1.3 (by Speed Sport Conversions)
Robin Gray – Escort Martin V8 3.0 - yellow
Doug Griffiths – Mini Clubman Cosworth Ford 1.0
Colin Hawker (Tolemans Delivery Services) – Escort V6 (new car June 1971)
Tony Hazlewood – Cortina Mk 1 GT40 V8 4.7 – ex Doc Merfield – for sale £900 (MN 21-10-71)

Mick Hill – Boss Capri V8 – he bought a damaged body-shell (for £40), cut away from the screen forward – the space frame used Lola T70 front suspension ( ex-Barrie Smith car crashed in BOAC 1000 – independent rear suspension (Lola uprights) with Jaguar diff. – Jaguar 4.2 gearbox – Gurney-Weslake Ford GT40 V8 4.7 (bought for £350.
