Favorite Drive

What is you Favorite drive or you favorite bit of road, You know the one, it's the one you travel an extra 10 minutes or what ever to drive on?

Mine is a road in Sydney called Henley Marine Drive it runs around the waters edge of Sydney, in the suburb where I grow up. It is a fantast bit of road, fast and slow corners off camber fantastic...........

So what is yours?????

I was going to say the road of thousand bends going to Lithgow (straightened!)

I was going to say National Park(straightened!)

I was going to say the the old Highway to Campbelltown (straightened!)

I could go on and on but I think the road into Tumbarumba might still be a blast....

I have quite a few- th A303 past Stonehenge is one, the northern part of the A1, etc etc although some of it depends on what I'm driving.

I can't find one yet that isn't crawling with cops. Otherwise the local parkway would be perfect... Lots of good corners, elevation changes, no center divide, soft shoulder, beautiful scenery... Feels very much like a proper road course.

But law enforcement always sets up speed traps at the tasty bits, because the speed limit is 25mph, despite the fact I could take the slowest corners at 40 without blinking.

I know that there are 2 bits of road within a few kms of here that I have a tendancy to go for. Because most motorists slow down for them, the police prefer to set up around the corner, at the bottom of a hill (). At least with that sort of predictability, you can totter around slowly in the straight bits, and have a go on the turns.

I have one or two -

A82, Glasgow to Fort William, especially north of Loch Lomond, through Glen Coe.

A6, Penrith to Kendal, including Shap, Cumbria.

B..., can't remember, Mold/Ruthin (I think!) to the A5, North Wales.

B32323232 or something, north of Plymouth through Dartmoor, 'til they spoilt it with a 40mph limit and traffic calming cos people kept hitting ponies

One I have yet to do - TT mountain section Isle of Man - and no speed limits!!

Theres a really steep hill not too far away from me, i havent been down it on a Motorbike or in a car yet however i went down it once on a BMX and hit 72mph top speed!!! some people say theyve had faster on mountain and racer bikes but 72mph!

The fastest I've ever recorded on a moutain bike was 32mph on a long decent in Wales. My brother was alongside on his very light racing bike (with expensive Italian components..) and was holding back!!
How did you measure your speed Ronnoco, and how the did you stop??

I quite enjoy the drive from Kurrajong through to bell on the Bells line of Road. It isnt as good as it used to be, but growing up around there and having a few late night runs along thgere it can be fun.

Henley Marine Drive... and old favourite.

But now, I am lucky to be able to get to some really fast roads without too much bother. I like the long and twisting corners on the Ducati, so any of the major roads to the West of where I am are unpoliced, over mountains and challenging what with the wildlife and the poor surfaces.

But hugely enjoyable. Like the road to the west of Kempsey on the weekend - 3rd, 4th and 5th gear at 8,000 rpm. A real blast for 90 klms.

I recorded my speed because one of my mates on a mountain bike who was rolling at the same speed had a speedo and his recorded 72mph, (72.58 or something like that) we checked the settings and this is an accurate measurment.
The hill's decent isnt as steep at the bottom so you slow down anyway but you could allways use a car as a parking device but i find that brakes work much better.

What is the question, Favorite drive OR Fastest drive?

If it is favorite drive their is none better ANYWHERE than Rt1 from Morro Bay, California up the coast to Carmel. Of course, I haven't been everywhere.

The A1A between Calgary and the Rockies . Nice winding road . It passes through several Indian Reserves , so you have to watch out for livestock and drunk ummm... Local People. It follows the Bow river and scenery is great..

I've only been on it twice, but the bells line of road ain't too bad.

Right near my place, we have Old Bathurst Road and Mitchell's pass, the good bit of old bathurst road starts just after the turn off to my house, up hill, hairpins, pretty blind corners and tree's close to the road, provided you know the road it is great fun (and it is pretty hard to speed as well, it's the corners that are fun), then you go through Blaxland and come down Mitchell's Pass, similiar to old bathurst but down hill, still good fun though, then pop out at Emu Plains, go along russell street and rejoin old bathurst road again and do it again (maybe stop off at the macca's on the corner. Round trip, 10 minutes.

The old Buladelah Mountains road now bypassed by the Pacific Highway, sections of the Royal National Park near my place, the 'Road to Hannah' (not sure of spelling) in Hawaii and Bells Line of Road

The road from Taree to Tamworth is great if your car can handle dirt, bumps and corrugations

Am still waiting to try the Great Ocean Road west of Melbourne

I did the Great Ocean Road in '96 in a 4-cylinder Magna automatic.

Really beautiful scenery and would be a great drive if they closed it off and sent us through one at a time, against the stopwatch.

The Seward Highway from Homer to Anchorage, a 236 mile (379km)drive. Granted, it's not a world-class auto course, but I've had many great times blurring down it. And it has fantastic scenery, provided you aren't driving so fast that it's nothing but a blur.

I was driving back from Homer midweek at 5 AM many summers ago, and the road was empty save for two fellows in a turbo Gran Prix. We raced for most of the 236 mile drive, save for the dash through Soldotna. I believe the average speed for the event was close to 80 MPH, with the throttles being wide open except through the twisties.

It wasn't a fair match, with the turbo Gran Prix having 200 HP versus my then SAAB's 135 HP and auto transmission, but I had fun catching up to them in the corners.

Then there was the time that my college mate and I drove to his parents' house in Homer in his used Mustang 5.0l. That drive was rather exhilirating. Luckily for us, his rear main engine seal gave out just as we were pulling into his parents' driveway.

We met a nice girl in the Salty Dawg Saloon who was planning on driving to Anchorage in the morning, and offered us a ride. Well, we decided to leave that night, but she and Joe were too tired to drive, so I got the honors. Or the horrors. Her car was a 1981 Ford Escort (which were junk new, much less with 200k miles on it)that looked and drove as if it hadn't seen a wrench since the day that it rolled off of the assembly line. It had one operable brake (the left front disk) and shocks that were merely ornamental at that point.

The car weaved and bobbed and lurched every inch of the 236 mile trip, which took a rather mind-numbing 5 hours to complete.

There is a two lane road from Salina, Oklahoma down to Spavinaw State Park that is probably as twisty as the faster sections of the Monte Carlo Rally. Its about 10 miles of switch back turns, offcamber sweepers, and pretty countryside.

Skyline Drive from Front Royal, Virginia to Charlottesville was one of my favorite drives. Took it on my Honeymoon in my dad's Integra on an unusually balmy March weekday. The road was empty for 90 miles of graceful twisting ribbon on the spur of the Blue Ridge Mountains overlooking the Shenandoah Valley. As dusk fell and we were still 20 miles from the exit, we rushed through the cooling spring evening hitting, 90 on the straights in a mad rush to leave before the gates were locked for the night.

Muggle not, I'm surprised you haven't mentioned it. Though the PCH 1 is a swell trip as well.

The old Pacific Highway from Berowra thru to Gosford. Used to be a favourite late night blast. The bells line is a great drive and I'd also like to mention the 2 sections of road no longer around..... the old Valla curves and the bends at Eungai on the Pacific Highway before they made it safe.
