Racing RSi should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
FANTASTIC PICTURES..

as you said.. Where they gone now... The Brooklyn came very close to being broken, as the last owner tried to sell it for 3 years... He was thinking to sell the bits with more money.. The Datapost was in NZ sold from the UK to NZ at the end of the 85 seasion.. thought to be no more untill one little comment from someone on the RSOC web site.. Three years later it came back to the UK.

Seems to be a common theme with these Group A threads- I guess a lot of cars have either been broken for parts, or progressively modified and altered to keep them competitive in other categories of racing once they were no longer competitive as touring cars or were overtaken by regualtion changes and expiry of homologation.

I still wonder how many are collecting dust in the back of various workshops across the UK, Europe and Australia though....

Welcome, Scott. This is probably better in the History forum, so I'm moving it there.

Definitely two different chassis- think it was mentioned earlier in the thread that the Duckhams prodsaloon was, as you said, an ex-Mike Smith Ilford car- the Willhire winner I think and apparently the first Prodsaloon RS Turbo built, and the Group A car an ex-Datapost car, the Curnow chassis I think.

There was a back-to-back track test of the pair by Tiff Needell in Autosport at the end of '86.

Think one of them at least was sold on by Ford and was campaigned for at least a couple of years- I saw pics of it on the 86 or 87 RAC in old Rally Sport mags recently- I'll look them out again to see who was running it then.

Brooklyn had a Group A rallycar as well I think- it was apparently even pressed into service as part of their BTCC team at least once!

Not Prod Saloon - Group 1 for the Duckhams car, the Ilford cars were Prod Saloons.

Gregor, think we're also talking about 2 separate Duckhams cars as well!!

In 1987 Karl drove a Duckhams backed car in the BTCC (presumed ex Curnow - Datapost, as KA mentions)]

He also pedalled a car in the Uniroyal/Monroe Production Saloon series in the same year which is believed to be an ex Ilford Mike Smith car.

Prod saloons preceeded Group N - Group N allowed a few mods (like slick tyres for a start) when those rules were adopted for the Unriroyal series in 1988 or 89. However, the Firestone series continued to run to producion spec rules I think?

By 1987 HPU73Y seems to have been owned by Barry Sugondo, who used it on the RAC that year- retired SS12 after pulling over to let a faster car pass and getting stuck without any spectators to help get them back on the road.

There's a pic of the car in that year's RallySport magazine RAC report, car #79 (Jan 88 issue I think). Sponsorship was from 'Pye Powersound'

A few more pics from Oulton Park in 1985- a Brooklyn RS1600i (John Morris I think?) in the BTCC race...

....but can anyone identify the plain white car seen here getting a bit too closely involved with the tyre wall...?

Could be either Mick McLlerney (excuse the spelling) or Chris Sanders, latterly of Historic Lotus Cortina fame. They were the only people other than 'Smithy' to run an RST in '85 from memory?

Could be Bob Sands, he definitely had one in '86 and I think he was number 14 (along with Gerry Marshall, Richard Belcher, Mike Smith and a few others in '86).

Yeah, you're right about '86 possibilities Gregor, but I believe the pic KA's referring to (#14 car) is from an '85 round? No doubt he'll remind us!!

It's captioned as '85, but as they're not my pics I can't vouch for the accuracy of the captions- Certainly a couple of the others in the album are slightly off-the-mark

Yes, Graham who owns the Brooklyn car has posted several times in the thread- he's also got the Datapost car that's recently come back from NZ (last couple of pages)

Going OT slightly, I notice that Corgi/Vanguard have launched a 1:43 scale model of this car. Not bad either.

Yes- haven't seen one in the metal yet, but knew it was due. As I recall there's a Gordon Spice Capri on the way as well

Escort Gr.A RSTurbo

Hello, I'm new here so don't shoot me if it's in the wrong section...

I am the owner of an ex Group A Escort RSTurbo, wich competed in German touringcar racing in the mid 80's.
I'm searching for some more history about this car and would be very pleased with old pictures of the car in action.

As far as i know, in 1985 the car belongs to Team Ford Grab (Bernhard Grab) drivin by Beate Nodes.
She raced it at;
Zolder (westfalenpokal), 18 August '85
Siegerland (Flughafenrennen), 8 September '85
And the Nurburgring (supersprint), 22 September '85

apparently it was sold to Mohag Motorsport in 1986 and Traudl Klink only raced it once at the Nurburgring (supersprint), 21 September '86

Who has any info about this, or other German Gr.A touringcar RSTurbo's?
I would be very grateful.

Best regards, Remy

I'm adding this into the main thread.
Thanks,
chunterer
forum host.

Is this the car that was featured in one of the UK Ford enthusiast magazines (Classic Ford maybe?) a year or so back? I don't have the article, but I'm sure I recall Beate Nodes being mentioned in the history as reported in the mag.

Welcome aboard Remy- it's always good to have contributions to the thread from the people who have actually owned or raced the cars, especially when it's a car we've not really talked about before.
