If i remember correctly the Porsche GTD car is pretty much a modified cup car with different rollcage, bodykit, exhaust and some other bits.

The base of the others are all GT3 cars with modifications for GTD class, no?

I have a great plan ... I will argue race cars with a race car driver, and I know it will go well since the driver in question has driven about everything, and I have ... stood next to a lot of different race cars.

OK, I missed that Porsche changed models. I meant that they got a big aero upgrade to match the GT3-based competitors.

Ferrari and Audi ran in GA but I thought they were modified GT3s.

Viper was developed for GTD/GT3.

Z4 never ran in GA. The Turner car raced in Blancpain (GT3) before. They even did a quick come back to GT3 spec last year when they did one PWC race. My point, difference (technically, financially, image-wise) is smaller than people think, although I'm sure it's massive for gentleman drivers.

Have I been that wrong? Hmm, don't think so.

Anyway, I just wanted to point that going GT3 will not massively improve GTD's TV ratings. Mike asked if I ever drove one. I've been enjoying the discussion since.

Exactly.

Funny thing is that the whole idea of GT3, 10 years ago, was that other manufacturers will also build Cup cars. Ratel wanted a cheaper class below GT1 and GT3. It just got out of hands quickly.

Porsche was very soon uncompetitive during the first year -> big upgrade. Didn't work, so they build the Cup S (which was later the base of the 2010 Cup car..). Then GT3-R, 991 next.

Yes. And FIA GT3, and Rolex GT, and ALMS GTC.

Here's a Grand-Am Rolex GT/GTD spec Ferrari:

And a FIA GT3 spec Ferrari:

It's the same physical chassis in both photos and was upgraded to FIA GT3 in 2014.

What qualifying lap time you think your full GT3 Ferrari can do at Laguna Seca on lets say...Conti tires?

Hi folks. New user and wanted to get my thoughts out on the event. I was there, actually I work there. Quick intro: I am a volunteer for S.C.R.A.M.P. and this is now my second year at Laguna Seca. As a member, I have been exposed to some awesome information both on and behind the scenes. Encounters with drivers/riders such as Scott Pruett and legendary m/c rider Wayne Rainey, to behind the scenes special test sessions, etc, and even pit access during a hot track. I love motorsports and have a fever for sportscar racing. Forgive me for registering after the event as I may have mised board members who attended to this years TUDOR event, but if you'll be back in the summer for Historic Races or Pirelli World Challenge in September, give me a hollar

Fun race for sure. I don't have offical numbers yet but I can say ther were a lot of people in the paddock, seemed a tad busier than last years event. But both this year and last year were down from previous years; notably from camp site reservations and people packing the hillside to spectate. The Deltawing is such a cool car in person and it definitely pulled harder out of the corners than I've seen since last year The roar of the SBC engines was awesome. Mazda always has a cool display with their diesel prototype and engine. Sadly the man in charge has said the diesel is facing meeting emmission standards for entry in the U.S. hence the delay. Anywhoo I still enjoyed the entire weekend, Conti Challenge was very good too.

GTD is not GAGT nor GTC. It's an improvement both and miles better than both!i rather enjoy gtd, it's way better than tube frame camaros and rx8s.

And what makes you think imsa isn't going to mess with the gt3s.i bet there will be engine and aero bop, no different than the bop mess gtlm has become.the only thing I look forward from gt3 next year is hopefully a merc, mclaren,Nissan, and a Lamborghini.

I would love to see those screaming, flame spitting rotary beasts back mixing it with GT3s and what else. Throw in those tub framers, Camaros too!

(not a GA but TA RX8 but that doesn't make it less desirable!)

Regarding attendance..it was down considerably. Many unused campsites..and a lot less spectators than even a grand am crowd of a couple of years ago. Not even close to alms numbers.

Some great safety after pit stops and once again no penalties from IMSA:
