The Atlanta Track :

I guess I have to admit , DW was right, what ever they did to the rules
changes basically negated each other. We were still left with cruise
control laps with 7 lengths in between cars. Even my 82 year old
mother told me she watched it on tv and said it was boring. Sure
they had the 2 big wrecks and cautions, but the restart action is
too short lived. I feel bad for Atlanta because I don't think the
product they put out there this past weekend will put more butts
in the seats come next race there.

They may want to consider taking the trioval out and going back
to a conventional straight away.

The trioval is the only way they can fit in all those empty seats! In fairness, attendance was better than I expected. I remember seeing the reconfigured track for the first time and I hated it. I still do!

I would go right through the grass and put up a barrier wall to separate the pits. Remember , the turn 3 stands are gone. That's huge. I hear a lot
of drivers say they love Atlanta and I know why, its relatively easy as far
as racing goes. Its wide, fast, etc. I have been going to that track since 83.
I like a change and thought the trioval would be good, but fans like myself,
are not that enthused with it. NASCAR even realized the problem and tried
to adjust it with the rules pkg. First time out, ain't happening. Eh, its early,
we will see. I just would hate to see Atl. lose the date because of low attendance. But from my corner of the world, my Nascar budget will lean toward the plate tracks going forward. BTW, Duchess is , I think 16th in
points, all hail to the queen, lol.

It was a new rules package, mistakes were bound to happen. It doesn't make sense for teams that have to race their way in to consistently bend the rules. Something had to be wrong on NASCAR's end to cause that many cars to go through inspection more than two times.

Plus, doesn't NASCAR inspect cars before practice sections as well? How did so many cars pass inspection for first practice and then fail pre-qualifying inspection?

That's a shame but that's how that cookie crumbled.
No mention in the article of the truck qualifying.
11 of the final 12 in the final quali session waited
too long on pit road and did not make it around in
time to post a time. It was strange to say the least.

Still looking forward to next race as always.

NASCAR looking for $1 billion over 10 years from new title sponsor of top series? NASCAR is asking $1 billion over 10 years for its soon-to-be-open Sprint Cup Series title sponsorship, according to sources. The sanctioning body has hit the market for Sprint's replacement with a price tag of $45 million to $50 million annually in rights fees and the same in activation over a decade, according to sources. Sprint confirmed in December that it would end its 13-year sponsorship of NASCAR's top series after the 2016 season. NASCAR declined to comment for this story. The asking price represents a 33% increase from the original deal, which was signed in 2004 with Nextel for a reported $750 million over 10 years before Sprint and Nextel merged. Amid struggling TV ratings and attendance for NASCAR at the time, Sprint negotiated that down to approximately $50 million annually when it signed a three-year extension in 2011, according to sources. The Sprint deal is the largest sports sponsorship in North America.(Sports Business Journal)(3-3-2015)

Wouldn't those be the stands formerly known as turn 1 at Atlanta International Raceway? The first race the track was reconfigured was 1997, I think, and I sat in temporary bleachers at the end of the new front stretch. Not an empty seat in the place and that was when both the T3 and backstretch/old frontstretch grandstands were still in place. My how things change...

That would be correct. Back in around '90 I took my wife to the spring race
and we sat there high up, great seats. The wind blew at 25mph all day with a wind chill of about 30 degrees. Not 1 caution. If there was one , it was debris. She basically said "don't you ever take me back again!".
Really couldn't blame her. She just recently said she may want to go to one soon.

You mentioned the back straight temporary stands. I was back there the
year they were brand new. We all stood up for the national anthem and
they began to sway. You could see the older crowd heading for the bottom.
I remember one lady making a beeline saying "I cant sit here". The rest of us who stayed had more elbow room and just dealt with it with good
Coors beer.

Next NASCAR stop will be Talladega fall.

I had no idea, that's a good move by NASCAR. Nice to see an organisation who realises the value of the online audience. Unlike some others. Who happen to be controlled by certain... people. With white hair.

I don't think anyone would have predicted seeing Truex, Allmendinger, and Mears in the top 10 in points after 3 races. Hopefully all of them can stay competitive for the rest of the year too.

On the other hand, Roush is really struggling now. Best finish out of any of their drivers is a 10th in the 500.

I'd have put money on Truex and Furniture row. Good single car, small time team and Martin is their best driver to date. The reader of the season? I'd say they do no worse Newman did last year......

It's hard to see past old Harvick. At least insofar as topping the "normal standings" are concerned. Busch was pacey in his race back.

Would have been good to see Harvick on the re-starts lose the lead to either Busch or McMurray - 6 top 2 finishes in a row for the reigning champ... Chevrolets are still dominating!
Is it time for Tony Stewart to retire?
