Notes from the North East

Dawson’s Double

Altodigital Easter Sprint Croft Circuit Darlington & District Motor Club

Date: April 9

The Run-off: Roy Dawson was in scintillating form, he had set a new Over Two-litre class record in qualifying and then blitzed the outright record for the Croft sprint circuit on his single run. Dan Pickett took a fine second place in only his second event with the ex-Roy Lane MP58. Stewart Robb in his familiar ex-Grace MP58 took third spot despite having to pull off the circuit on his second run with a suspected puncture. Top two-litre was Terry Holmes who had also set a Two-litre class record in qualification. The Chichester Chippy took a creditable fourth just ahead of Stewart Robb Junior who was co-driving the family MP58. Young Stewart started the day steadily and chopped seconds off his time on each successive run; his second Top 12 run was his fastest run of the day despite bogging the start! Sixth place was picked up by Mole Racing’s Steve Miles in his familiar Van Diemen while Mr Consistancy (Graham Porrett) finished in seventh. Mark Smith was making his single seater debut with the ex-Waggitt Reynard 903 and finished eighth even though he also missed his second run when the front wing collapsed as he headed through the complex. Tom Potter had qualified his 1100 Jedi in eighth with a new class record but wasn't able to replicate the pace in the run-off slipping back to ninth. Kevin Lealan had hit trouble in qualifying and had just sneaked into the run-off however he did pick-up the pace but had to be content with tenth. Final points scorer was Big John Tomlinson in the brutal Westfield SEight; John was another Run-off debutante and was delighted just to get the two extra runs. Missing from the run-off was Matt Oliver, the Gould had broken a bolt in the rear suspension during qualification which was replaced but when the corresponding bolt broke again the Oliver's withdrew.

Rd 1 SBD Motorsport British Sprint Championship: Croft
1 Roy Dawson (3.5 Gould-NME) 67.98; 2 Dan Pickett (3.5 Pilbeam-Judd MP58) 68.73; 3 Stewart Robb Snr (3.5 Pilbeam-DFR MP58) 71.50; 4 Terry Holmes (2.0 Reynard-Ford SF84) 72.84; 5 Stewart Robb Junior (3.5 Pilbeam-DFR MP58) 74.93; 6 Steve Miles (2.0 Van Diemen-Ford RF96M) 75.42s; 7 Graham Porrett (2.0 Reynard-Ford SF84) 76.16; 8 Mark Smith (2.0 Reynard-Opel 903) 76.34; 9 Tom Potter (1.1 Jedi-Suzuki Mk 4) 76.82; 10 Kevin Lealan (2.0 Formula Vauxhall Lotus) 77.05; 11 John Tomlinson (4.0 Westfield SEight) 81.90; No Other Runners.

There were several other class records broken most notable being Martin Depper in the Mod Prod Mini. The Porsche Speed contenders again provided bags of colour and excitment as did the Westfield Speed runners. In the TVR classes Simon Cole in the white wedgie won the BIG one with two consistant times whilst the 'Vixen' class went to the hard charging Stewart Lobley. There was a bit of a shock in the 1300 Road Going class when David West got beaten by Martin Addison in the 106!

All in all a cracking day of sprinting under blue skies for the most part. Croft really is the best place to start the season!
