Zandbak should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
A very rare Alfa 156 Coloni, does anyone know more?

During todays New Year race at the circuit of Zandvoort we saw a very special and unique car, the Alfa Romeo (Coloni) 156 Maxiturismo. During the first hour it showed some real speed. It could easily follow some Porsche GT3-cups. Then it had a little crash and that was end of story for todays race.

source: http://www.alfisti.net/357.0.html

From what I've found on the net it was conctructed and tested in 2000 by Coloni. They speak about a possible debut in 2001 in a Spanish touringcar championchip. But can't find anything about that.

Does anyone of the touringcar freaks know what this cars has done between 2001 and 2004? And how many of these cars do excist?

Pictures of today:

Start of the race

The team that raced this Coloni is called Euro Magnum Racing, drivers are Bob van der Sluis and Paul Nieuwenhuis.

Ah...I remember this. I do not remember what it was in particular, but this touring car was set to be part of a new championship in Spain I think. Obviously never took off.

This Alfa Romeo 156 is a five years old project (Capeonato Maxiturismos) in Spain, and it was near to become reality thanks to R.P.M. (WS by Nissan/Renault promoter). Idea was simple: Coloni chassis for all cars and every manufacturer could put its bodywork on it. Car had a shakedown at Jarama track with Luis Villamil (usual Alfa driver) and Antonio Garcia, and it was really fast, without correct set-up and on cold track scored 1:34 at Jarama when FIA GT Viper polesitter did 1:30.
This Alfa has a V6 3L. engine with 372hp, sequential gearbox and a ligth weigth, 800 Kg.
Do you think this car looks like new Megane Trophy? you are correct, Megane is based on this Alfa (obviously because RPM is Megane promoter as well)

The rims and rear wing look like they have come from a '96 Alfa 155 DTM.

Could this Alfa be also based or inspired by the proposed silhouette series to replace the DTM back in '97? Didn't they build a one off Alfa 156 as a testcar?

You remember the other very special Alfa "touring car", which never raced - the Alfa Romeo 164 Procar, which had a Formula 1 engine, Alfas own V12 shortened to a V10.

According to my info Alfa 156 Maxiturismo was 100% RPM project and wasn´t based on other car.

Funny how Alfa has always been prepared to pump money into pointless ideas.

I don't think Alfa put money in 156 Maxiturismo. They put money, and a lot, in Bernie's Procar

The car has 100% privately funded by Coloni and the intention was to sell it to Rpm as a demo model to create a championship in Spain. The intention was to have a spec chassis and different bodyworks to choose from. The idea was valid but in the end Rpm was not interested and the whole project was stopped and sold to Holland. The chassis was a modified version of a Tampolli sportscar alu monocoque design that run at that time in the Italian sportscar championship mated to an group "N" Alfa engine and a Hewland gearbox. Basically a sportscar with a raised driving position and a 3 element carbonfibre bodywork made at Coloni's. Initially it weighted around 700kg and did 1min 11secs at Colonis hometrack in Magione (FiaF3000 does 1min 04secs there). It was quite quick!
