This City Boy will have to be working that day unfortunately, in the hope that I might be favourably viewed come April (not very promising in my little corner of the financial world ..)
Happy Christmas etc. James |

That reminds me of what I had on my motorcycle helmet in the 60s John when I used to frequent the Ace NCRNR. I havent thought of that for years. :-)

Or in my case North Circular Road Night Riders. ;-) It looked a bit sad on the back of a symulated nazi storm troopers crash helmet though!

My first introduction to motor sport was with that sidecar outfit as a group of us would go down to the old Hendon Aerodrome and hold races around the peri-track before we got chased off, get a mate on the back doing the old climbing over the sidecar to keep the thing down around the left handers, great fun, and that bird reconned I could not handle a race Hillman Imp or an Astra GT, yeah right!

Well Al, perhaps you should prove her wrong and get an Imp and come out in the HRSR! There were 7 Imps racing this year and there should be more in 2010.

It was 40 odd years ago! :-) I built an Imp race car once I will try to get a picture of it, I scrapped it after one race at Haringay Stadium as the car just wouldnt turn in. What happen I developed a Mini/Ford HotRod pre Fiesta days and spent a season getting it right, gave some of the top boys a scare when they visited my home track so they banned it! So what I did was took the whle subframe and running gear out and fitted it amidships in a Hillman Imp, this car redefined the word understeer, it took me months of effort but was obvious on its first outing it was never going to work so I cut it up.

Thinking back i cant believe I built that thing and have no recollection how I got the mini sibframe in the back of a Hillman Imp or how I got around such complexities as the gear linkage or locking up the steering! I must have been more barking back then than I am now!

Of the Imp? Ok here is a couple. Actually I must have used it at Bovingdon as well as the Stadium was indoors and the 2nd shot in the wet, oh and those arches were galvanised steel, it was like a bloody tank! There is also some shots of the Mini Ford that the running gear came from. I had that signwritten by a brushman took him a couple of days something I could do today in an hour! Hey I just noticed the Escort grill on the MiniFord, nice touch Al!

Hey Al i know we have not met each other."looking forward to that at the Ace". BUT!!!!!!. One thing i've noted on your racing career. You have driven cars that don't seem to handle that well..Might spend some time on the 30th convincing you to drive a single seater. Thanks for the photo's excellent.

great shots Al, I love the Bic roll cage (probably over safe for the period) and the oil cooler location, maximise the chances of a hot shower!
Iain, if it handles too well it takes all the fun away, like magnets on scalextric! |

Thats why I said on another thread Iain given the chance with the right car I feel I could have been as good as anyone without blowing my own trumpet but no one else will
Also judging by reactions of professional testers like Mark Hales and Art Marcus that have track tested some of my stuff usually something like "How the ...k do you drive that thing" . I once got a comment in Autosport in a report on a Road Saloon race that "Al Weyman's Sunbeam looks like the only car I have seen that oversteers and understeers at the same time". (See below). |
