I luv the Combi Beany reminds me of the one I had in me yoof and toured all the continent in, also love that Merc transporter thats sheer class. I remember years ago a lot of the Formula Ford and lightweight single seater boys used to use a flat bed VW transporter with the base widened, anyone remember those as they were very popular as I recollect.

Here is my old company hack which we sold last year. It would have made a good retro tow vehicle. They are fairly rare these days. It's actually called a 'Kemperink' which was produced in Holland (presumably just after they'd had a smoke!)

I seem to remember back in the 70's someone used a Mini pick-up with everything behind the cab removed, and a car trailer grafted on, to carry (what I seem to remember was) a Mini race car. Rig and car were painted in similar colour schemes as well if I'm still remembering properly.
Does anyone else remember this? (I think it was featured in CCC magazine sometime too).

This was parked in the paddock at Paul Ricard yesterday - what a proper race transporter!

It especially looked great against all the massive modern transporters behind.

UK registered so he had done some miles to get down there.

Brilliant stuff.

Rover BRM had a great transporter at the 1965 Le Mans. It was based on the Land Rover Forward Control, but extended and converted to front wheel drive only to allow the rear to lower for access.

Brilliant find Jeff!
Sad man that I am, this type of thing fascinates me, I love it when the racing engineering ingenuity filters down into things other that the race cars themselves.
Let's face it, can you imagine the conversation when they discussed building the transporter: "Let's take a forward control Land Rover, convert it to run front wheel drive only, and fit a hydraulic controlled platform on the back that can be lowered down to load & unload the race car!"
(It's far more interesting than towing a Brian James' trailer behind an estate car!)

It was a rally car transporter. not race car, but I have fond memories of my old 1967 (E-reg) Mk1 Transit 35cwt van.....over the years it morphed from its original V4 2-litre form into a Capri 3-litre engined beastie, that excelled itself by blasting past all the other transporters up the hill out of Llandindrod Wells after the rally, only to deliver an interesting opposite locking experience at the right-hander at the top of the hill as one of the rear wheels deflated.....

It was a thirst beasty, but only about 2-3 mpg worse when towing than the 2-litre....and SOOOOO much more useable.

We borrowed another twin-wheel trannie one year to go to Germany for the Rally Deutcheland, when the original LT van (fitted with a Rover V8 and auto box) ran its bearings about 20 miles from departure from Liverpool. The replacement looked standard, but housed a 5.7 litre V8, auto box, and disc-braked rear axle.......

It was great, but very thirsty, towing a Starion rally car....but wore out a prop U/J on the journey back across the continent from Paderborn......limped onto the ferry, and got halfway up the hill out of Dover until it upshifted and snapped the remaining bit of the U/J. Unhooking the trailer and rally-car and turning it round on the hill was something of a challenge...until we noticed that the Transit was disappearing down the hill as the handbrake on the rear discs wasn't very good........once we'd caught it, the guy who was driving protested that "I'd put it in Park".....

We gently explained that once the propshaft was disconnected for drive purposes, it probably wouldn't stop it either.......

Once we'd coasted back into Dover, we rang the RAC - the Recovery back up to the pool saved us a fortune in Petrol....the recovery driver wasn't too impressed tho'

Were thay gutless or what fitted with a taxi engine as I recollect. I later built threepenny bit Mk 2 from a twin cab version I bought from the Post Office, the throttle got stuck wide open on A1 on the way up to Boston Raceway and I had to stall it on the brakes and that version did have some torque I thought I would never have stopped till I got to Scotland!

A nut on the end of the speed controller had come undone as I recollect meaning it would have revved to destruction as there was no way to shut it down, man I can remember standing on that brake pedal now trying to stall the bugger!

Correct, same as the old Gardiners, the only way was cut the fuel line, Very quickly! or as Al remarked stall it, I rather think the clutch would destroy itself or the brakes? failed. Oh the joys of long forgotten motoring.
