I have stumbled on this thread when reminiscing about my childhood and to my amazement Keith was asking about Sue Davies' Maguire imp. And then to see the article from Motoring News and the photo I took!! I went to most of her races as junior mechanic. Unfortunately Sue is no longer with us I last saw her at my wedding twelve years ago when she was suffering from the torment of Alzheimer's. I last saw the car at Prescott but am not sure who owned it then. Please let me know if I can be of assistance, not sure if I still have any photos.

Cheers Julian

I'm not sure but would the 6R4 have been around in the late 70's early 80's ?

Hi Steve65,
Barry did mention you, no doubt we will catch up at some time as I am going to keep in close touch with Barry for the duration !

6R4 was introduced in 1985 I think. The current CSCC regs are for cars up to 1993 age.

I have now spoken to George, thanks to davyboy,& found a few more bits of information.
George had the car built by John Maguire in 1986,he ran it with a 1600 crossflow,& last raced it in 1994.

I loved that car back in the days here in Ireland. George had a fantastic red Maguire Mini before it. The Irish GT's were great back in the 80's, the grids were relatively small but of real quality. There were 4 or 5 mainstay guys in the big class (up to 1600) and they were all pretty evenly matched so some great ding dong battled ensued. The cars were bloody quick too, often guys from the UK would come over in far more powerful cars and get a spanking.

I was sad to see George's mini go at the time when he replaced it with the Metro but it grew on me such that I ended up really loving it. It was fairly basic when he first got it but gradually modified it. I think he may even have lengthened it later in its life but I can't be certain - it just looked longer in later years. It was a bit of a twitchy bugger at the front so lengthening it would have made it more stable. I could be totally wrong!!

You are not mistaken. The car has been lengthened by about 6",by putting a spacer between the engine & gearbox,& lengthening the trailing links.

Maybe I have the 850 mini of Bernstein! i bought it about 20 years ago from John Simpson and he told me that it was raced by Bernstein! at that time it was raced with a short stroke 8port 850cc engine!
I got these 3 b&w pics with the car, I don't know which year ! but I m sure that it is in Silverstone !
May be you can help me ! John Simpson said also that the car had a Maguire rear axle, the complete back panel is alloy, bonded and riveted and the roof is fiberglass , also the door skins are alloy , a really lightweight body shell full of holes ,also in the inner sills !

Hi,
The car you have is not a Maguire car, it certainly looks ex Bernstein but is likely to be the car he used prior to running the spaceframe Maguire car, (see post #59 in this thread).
His cars were always immaculate and very well engineered, he was also a very capable pilot.

Hi Steve,
I haven't heard from Barry for a few months, the last photo's he sent me were of the chassis being panelled with ally.

I will email him and see if he has a progress report for me.

Regards,
Ron.

4 I cannot recall the 1 litre Chrade Imp of Adrian Gamble i do recall the 850 Chris Roberts car
5 Nick Birch is in a Mason Stilleto ricky gauld possibly too or a davrian Imp I would need to see photos of the cars
6 Mike Luck built is own spaceframe Imp
Driftwood.....can you please PM me.

I have the Roberts 850 Chrade spaceframe. I would like to know what you remember about Gamble & Roberts. (sounds like a toothpaste make....)

As far as I can work out, they were racing partners. Initially with a steel shell Imp, which probably ran a 998, and then when they got the spaceframe running an 850. Chris drove the spaceframe.

I reckon Chrade = CHRis / ADE-rian
