David Grace

Well not only do we have an Ex Hill climb driver in WTCC, Andy Priaulx, we now alos have David Grace Managing the Chevrolet team.

Didn't know this was happening.

Good on him, especially as the first round saw a 1,2,3 for the team.

I was surprised too. I helped a very unassuming David Grace change the clutch and gearbox on his Healey at Spa two years ago. A proper gentleman.

I nearly dropped my coffee in surprise when he was interviewed on Eurosport last night.

Anyone able to provide the story behind this?

Before David went full time in the sport, he worked for an engineering company, and we worked together on a project redeveloping the Abbey National HQ in London... Early 80's, they recently pulled the building down

Did he not manage Rockingham for a few years?

He did. I believe one of the corners is named 'Gracelands' because that's where he parked a Ferrari. That might be an apocryphal story, but I'd like it to be true.

Prior to that CE/Chairman or similar of... not sure - Courage Leisure IIRC.

I seem to remember it was Scottish and Newcastle he was boss of.

One of his old Mallocks also won the first race to be completed at Rockingham.

Not quite , but almost , he was MD of the Managed House division, prior to which he was MD of a Company called Inntrepreneur , the pub leasing division of Grand Metropolitan ( where I worked with him ) , what better place to spend your spare work time, working for a Pub Co & talking about motorsport Those were the days

Was chatting to David on Saturday at Cadwell, turns out there is a hillclimb connection, David used to run a Mallock, and has known Ray since he first met him at Arthurs home, Ray has asked David to carry out a man management role, and to front up the team to the media, having already done this sort of thing at Rockingham.

A total gentleman who would quite willingly have stood chatting for ages, but for the fact we were holding up the scrutineering queue.

David is an ace guy. And a superb Healey driver as well. We met at Spa6 2006 and have a chat and a coffee when time allows when at a meet.

He told me about his Chevrolet venture when we had a chat at last Algarve Classic at the Autodromo Portimao.

Yeah, although it was a while ago now, have just seen this thread. I knew David well from competing against him on the hills in the days when Clubmans they were probably as competitive as any class in the championship, with the class usually decided by hundredths of a second. In fact when I sold up in the UK and moved to Australia in the early 1980's I sold him my 1700cc full spec Clubmans A class engine which he seemed to get on well with before moving on to bigger and better cars.

Good to see he is still around in Motor Racing circles. He was always a friendly and very pleasant guy who would help anyone in need.

Was pleased to see Gracey in the regularity section of Tour Britannia when it visited Prescott hillclimb yesterday - driving a Morris Minor!

Can anyone help me photos etc of David Graces' hillclimb car 1983-1984 which was a Mallock 14/25 1700cc. I have the car in Melbourne Australia and would like to put some photo history and results together for that time. Derek McLaughlan
