What a great race (and thank goodness Gravett didn't win it!).
Plus a sad reminder of some great drivers who are no longer with us...

Well, there were good reasons to put SuperTouring down. Group A in 88 and Group C in 91 however are prime examples of putting a good set of regulations down for no good reason, other then them being too good (We blame Bernie for both!).

Maybe it was a good way, to create equal cars in Super Touring. You need to have similar concepts to start such series.
Groupe A was good, but you could start with turbocharged Sierra Cosworth against normal aspirated BMW M3, equaled through weight...

Well, not quite...

We've all been round the loop a few times re Group A. That category would have gone on a lot longer if the FIA had stuck to the minimum mass produced build rule and hadn't permitted limited run homologation specials. Whilst the Sierra, M3 and R32 were great racing cars and spectacle their superiority swiftly led to the demise of Group A as manufacturers were forced to spend silly money to build something not in their mainstream model plans in order to win.

So they didn't and it died!

Manufacturers generally liked the option of being able to run and promote different sizes of car and engine sizes in Group A as much as they liked the obvious direct comparisons in super touring. That's why we often saw more than one type of Ford, AR, Toyota etc

Each type had pro's and cons really.
