Handicap endurance races in the US circa 1970's

Hi Everyone,
Does anyone have any info on endurances races run in the US in the 1970's using a handicap system (slowest qualifier with cars starting at intervals after that). I believe they may have been held in the upper Mid-West (Road America, maybe?) I remember reading about them in Autoweek at the time.

A F5000 race was held at Road America using ahandicap system similar to what you describe. Tom ('RA Historian') should be able to help.

Winner was Vern Schuppan (was this the only Jorgensen win in 5000?) then Warwick Brown, Derek Bell, Richard Shirey, Peter Gethin (in the B37) and Brian Redman (who also got fastest lap). The handicap race appears to have been the day after the points race, was 25 laps against the points race 20 and paid 11000 dollars against the points race 6750!

The handicap was generated from the points race qualifying, Brian and Al Unser were gridded 29th and 30th and given 3' 30"handicap (if I understand this correctly) - scratch was Ed Polley (given in a T332) who finished 19th after a spin and completeing 10 laps. Big Al didnt start. Did they really start that far back and get a handicap as well? - if so that must have been some race!!!

I believe the first Lumerman's IMSA/non-points race combine at Mid-Ohio was also in handi-cap formula.
