Aftermarket ECU and electric power steering

Im preparing a megane r26(renault) and i want to run an aftermarket ECU but im concerned about the power steering, i assume it relies on CAN data to power the steering rack at different speeds, i dont want to pull the whole steering out and replace it with something else, especially as all meganes have electric power steering so I would have to go with another car or even manufacturer which sounds like a huge pain, thers not even a pas pump on the engine for example. Has anyone any experience with electric power steering on aftermarket ecu's?

Thanks

There are standalone controllers that you can get that take care of the electronic power steering. I'm not familiar with the Renault set up but some even have their own ecu that takes care of it, which looks at the torque applied. The only thing they need is a power supply and a vehicle speed input. This may be available from your ecu, otherwise you can either take a signal from another source (gearbox) or some people with race cars event create a false signal with a dial to wind the assistance up or down. This way you can back the assistance right off while racing for more feel and less current draw on the electrical system.

There's a couple more things involved in the R26 setup but it's nothing that can't be circumvented.
