Gorgeous- Anything do with this?
"An important sideline appeared when Group C and IMSA GTP racing started; March built a line of sports-prototypes descended from the unsuccessful BMW M1C, which, fitted with Porsche or Chevrolet engines, enjoyed considerable success in America (but less in Europe)." |

More detail please! What engine? March's input? Where did you find it? Where and when can we see it in action? I think Iain is heading a VERY long queue of wannabee test drivers
Fantastic. |

Nice to see you're just as excited as we are!
This car is indeed chassis 003, raced by Jim Busby, Bruce Jenner and Bob Gregg and others.. We found it in the garage of Bob Gregg, the original owner who kept it for almost 30 years! It's unused since 1984'ish, allthough work has been done to keep it in good shape. If you want to know more about these cars (there where 3 made, number three build up from crashed number one.. and there was a show car) you can look at my other vid, it's only pictures and it's probably everything you will find at the web because we've been looking for them for like 3 years now, but if you have some additional pics (or info) we would be delighted! There's also some info written in the video description about these cars. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SjOfJZLf1a8 The car came with it's original procar engine, so maybe in the future you'll see it at the le mans classic.. (dreams..), but since the early 80's it's equiped with V8's, and also raced with them in imsa races. Actually we think it's conversion to V8 made it the very first car built to GTP specs.. The engine in the video is installed since ~1983, i'll quote the previous owner: "The Chev that is in the car was built in the early '80s. It was state of the art at the time with a 4 bolt race block,an Aluminum heads roller cam and lifters and rockers and is a little over 400 CI.and made a little over 700 HP and was setup for endurance racing. It has a single 4bbl carb dry sump and 180 degree exhaust. The engine has been started almost monthly since installed." Also, we've found this promo videos of our car during the Sebring 12 hours of 1980! With the screaming BMW six! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SjOfJZLf1a8 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tdwrs...eature=related So.. Anymore anyone wants to know? |

Lots....
Brilliant- thanks for posting all that info! I'm sure the story of how you came across the car and finished up buying it from Gregg would be fascinating to hear but guess a magazine article may be pending in the future?..... So what are your thoughts about keeping the V8 or swapping back to original BMW 6? Are the other cars still about? Where do you think it will make first race appearance? I'll stop there! |

Well.. actually it was a big shock when we saw it on Bring A Trailer in December!
A couple of years back we stumbled upon a spare chassis and a lot of parts and molds from the factory. The plan was to build this chassis up with all the spare parts. So we spend a couple of years locating and collecting a lot of parts. Ofcourse we tried to find out what happend to the cars.. We found out that one, the one that raced at le mans and was the "works" car, is in Germany. It's on shows sometimes, but never races.. We knew the other one, this one, was last raced in the USA and we tried to contact some people who where involved.. but none replied. Also there where some rumours that this car was lost.. It was a bit of a dead end really. So we where just casually scrolling down at BAT, and suddenly we saw the car! We went a bit nuts ofcourse! So now it's here and we are very excited. A magazine article would be great, maybe it's posible Both engines are historically correct, so we're not sure what to do.. We probably race it first in the YTCC (youngtimer touring car challenge), because they like the car and we are racing there for a couple of years now (first with bmw e30 325i street stock, last year with a bmw e30 M3 group A, look at my other vids). www.ytcc.nl , but we don't know when because there is a lot to be done.. For instance, there is a aluminum cage in it.. this is not permitted right? We don't know if we have to change it.. and then there is the feul tank and other safety stuff that needs to be sorted. Well, we've set a target for the 2-3 july le mans weekend (Le Mans Story), because we would like to see it race there (Bugatti circuit, but that means you may pass under the dunlop bridge more often!). |

Great story and fascinating stuff- good luck with it all. I would think that updating the safety equipment will be your biggest challenge- don't think alloy cages are allowed at all nowadays in competition, but would be happy to be corrected on that! Presume it has some sort of bag fuel tanks?
I'm sure one of the major magazines would be keen to feature the car when race ready and certainly the BMW specialist ones should be knocking on your door! |

I think at one time alloy cages were allowed if the car was originally fitted with one (Porsche 917 IIRC). Don't know if that is still the case.

I think the alloy cage concession was if it formed part of the structure of the car- which could be case on 917.
Not winter here today but plenty of projects to finish off! Scorchio! |

Went to see our winter project yesterday at the preparers, somewhat lower down the food chain than the Beemer above but if all goes well should debut at Cadwell.
